Replacing Factory Amplifier Under Tour Pack
« on: May 30, 2011, 01:18:03 PM »

Has anyone replaced the Factory Amplifier under the tour pack with an aftermarket amp? I replaced my head unit after the original HK failed thinking I would be able to use the factory amp under the tour pack. I found out that this amp is now basically useless and I need an amp. I do not think I could fit an amplifier inside the Batwing (My aftermarket Radio already has a Satelite radio module) because it is just too cramped up in there. The spot under the tour pack seems ideal, but I was wondering if anyone has found an amp that would fit in that spot with minimal customization. If so what amp did you find and what tips can you offer.

Thanks alot,

Ray

Perhaps some will chime in with other ideas, but Don (Twolane) has the most experience with craming the most possible stuff into the batwing...I think he's got either the Hawgwired or HogTunes amps inside the fairing, so it can be done.  Perhaps he could give you some pointers on locations for the aftermarket amp(s).

I think the weak links in the HD system are Speakers, Head unit and amp in that order.

Changing the amp alone doesn't get you much.......more power?

The speakers easily changed and make the most difference.

The head unit is hard to change due to it's integration with XM/CB/ and controls, but can be done.

Changing the amp gets you the least and the wiring connections would have to be changed. Or find a product that has been made for this specific task.

So I am replacing the speakers....I bought Infiniti 5.25" for the rears, and I am waiting on the Rokker 7.25s to put in the front. The Sony head unit I put in has 2 pcs (SCSNY1 and an SCC1) for the Sirius satellite, they are mounted currenly on top of the head unit inside the Batwing. My biggest concerns for putting anything else in the Batwing are of course heat and space. With there being an amplifier under the Tour Pack that is now currently useless, That seems to be a much better place for either a 4 or 6 channel amp. I have read and seen pictures of many people putting amplifiers inside the Batwing, but if I could put an amp outside, that would be a much cooler spot to have it.
Surely someone must have done it. When I started down this path of replacing the head unit, I was misled into thinking I could reuse the Harley Amplifier, I should've done more research. But hey, I would not mind the extra trouble if the end result is better sound.

Thanks again for the replies
