:nixweiss:   What study was that?  The "Top 25" lists I've seen don't include many of the ones your list does, especially the West Virginia towns.  And your list is missing the real most dangerous neighborhoods, like several in Chicago, Detroit, Washington DC, etc.

I live and work in Columbus and while i find it hard to believe that #11 is the 11th most dangerous neighborhood in the country, the area does have more than it's share of crime issues. #12 on the other hand is not even close to being a problem area....not sure where they got their statistical information for their study but they missed it on this one.

What's the study and what's the danger? Lane and Neil is only dangerous if you're an ESPN talking head.

Isla Vista, Ca   :nixweiss:

Isla Vista is notable for its unique student and beach culture, cultivated by a population largely made up of UCSB and Santa Barbara City CollegeSanta Barbara City College
Santa Barbara City College is a two-year community college founded in 1909. It is located on a 74-acre campus right over the beach in the city of Santa Barbara, California, USA. SBCC offers associate degrees in English, Social Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, and occupational...

With warm days year-round, Isla Vista teems with hundreds of students, who enjoy sunbathing, surfing, soccer, frisbee, and other recreational activities to escape the rigors of academic life. The strong beach culture is also an important facet of the town's identity. Residents who live on Del Playa DriveDel Playa Drive

Apparently I missed the most dangerous related to "property" crime.

most listed were statistically saying that you had a 100% chance of being a victim if you lived those areas

I guess the kids tear up the rentals, dam college kids. They have had rent control in that area for years and there are some old hippy "student activists"   that have lived in the area since the 60 and 70's and won't move out. Most of my friends that went to UCSB never graduated because of the distractions...babes, surf, parties, and good employment opportunities in the local resort community. "Why sould I study when I can make $200 a night in tips bartending.

That being the case then the Rocket Scientists at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville Alabama must be real hard core thugs.

Overall property crime was down in 2010, according to the latest statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigation -- a piece of good, if puzzling, news for economists and crime watchers, who typically expect crime to rise when the economy is bad. The FBI reported that all categories of property crime, including burglary, larceny theft and motor-vehicle theft, declined 2.8% overall from 2009, with the biggest drop of 7.2% for stolen cars.

Yet for some smaller American towns, local statistics tell a different story. Larceny and burglary increased slightly in non-metropolitan areas, according to the report, and burglary in the northeast region is up 3.5%. Other mid-sized cities like Erie, Pa., Fresno, Calif., and Evanston, Ill., also reported increases in property crime.

Factors like high unemployment, drug-related burglaries and perhaps a sense that "crime only happens in the big city" can contribute to property crime in non-metropolitan areas, says Robert Siciliano, a home security expert and consultant with ADT Security Services. Foot traffic is a factor too: Homes in less-populated areas simply don't have the same surveillance as urban areas.

If you don't know what the property crime rate in your area is, you can map local crimes

I wonder if some of that up tick in "property" crime isn't also related to the way many smaller cities and towns are balancing their budgets on the backs of the public safety folks (police and fire) rather than cut nonessential spending (like friends and relatives at the trough).  I see it around this area, I've read about it all across the country.  Cut the public safety jobs, it doesn't take the average criminal that long to figure out there isn't anyone patrolling anymore.

I've lived in Austin for a long time, and MLK/Lamar is nowhere near the most dangerous part of Austin, much less #6 in the nation.  It is actually quite nice, with a park, exclusive neighborhood, not far from campus.  I would walk, live, or work there without thinking twice about it.

About the most unlawful thing happening there is the annual Eeyore's Birthday celebration in Pease Park, which is a hippie festival dating back to the late 60's/early 70's.  Lots of tie-die, drum circles, and you can get high just standing downwind.
