Some can be thrown with keyboard sequences.  There's HTML code for most characters also.  For direct input the easiet way on a Windows machine is to find a program under Accessories/System Tools called "Character Map."  Find the character you need there than cut and paste where you need it.  

If not doing it often the Character Map is easiest.  If using an accented or other oddball character relatively often it's quicker to learn the keystrokes (if they exist for a given character).
