Fairing Bracket Torque Values
« on: June 07, 2011, 12:52:53 PM »

Hello Everyone,

I looked in the service manuals and can't seem to find any torque values for the fairing bracket screws.  From looking online, I find that highway pegs are torqued to 45 ft-lbs (max).  When tightening the screws last night, I snapped one off at less then 25 ft-lbs.  I think it snapped to do improper alignment and not torque.

Does anyone know what these screws are torqued to?  If I remember, they seemed tight when I removed them.  Just trying to do thing according the the book.

I don't have it in front of me here at the office but did you check the service manual section on removal / installation of the highway / crash bar?  I seems to me that's where you'd find it.  I have twice swapped out the h / c bar and retightened the screws, #2 but can't recall useing a torque wrench.  I recall that the brackets, #11 felt like soft pot metal so I'd err on the light side and use a bit of medium (blue) loctite.  Hope this helps.

It that's a 1/4-20, I wouldn't go much over 90-100 in-lbs w/blue loctite.

I found this.
http://www.almabolt.com/pages/catalog/bolts/tighteningtorque.htm

From what I am seeing, there is a grade 8 marking on the bolt.  Reading the chart, it is 12 ft-lbs (144 in-lbs) max. 100 in-lbs sounds like a good number to torque to with blue loctite.

Thanks for clearing this up for me Greg & Matt.  I did check the manuals and did not find the specs.  I am not saying they are not there, just did not find them.

I did think that 45 ft-lbs seem way to high.
