Battery good but bike won't start
« on: June 07, 2011, 02:23:28 PM »

I'm on my 2nd battery that has just went dead.  1st battery lasted 11 months then, just out of the blue wouldn't start the bike.  All the electronics and lights worked but it would just try to turn over and click, click, click.  So, I purchased a new battery and it lasted 1 month and same thing just happend.  Rode to work, then home for lunch and then click, click, click.  Also, I put my onld battery on a regular charger and now it's been brought back to life.  I tried to trickle charge it but that didn't work.  What is the problem???

Check your battery cable ends. Even if they look OK. Use sand paper on the connecting side and di-electric grease.
I had a simillar problem and that took care of it.
Good Luck

If I was a gambling man, I'd say it's the stator. Your battery is not charging, so the lights and anything else your running are drawing down your battery. Turn the bike off and when you go to start it again, there's not enough volts to turn the starter over. As far as a battery tender, It takes about three days to completely charge a dead battery. Disconnect the stator from the voltage regulator and start your bike. Set a volt meter to AC volts and place the leads into the stator connector. Check what the output is @ 2000 RPMs. It should be 42 volts AC. If it's alot lower, then your stator is toast. If it's 42 volts AC, then your voltage regulator is the problem. Buddy of mine had the same problem.

:2vrolijk_21:Good advice! Sound electrical connections solve a lot of problems.

They didn't really weather/oil proof the stator wire at the crankase until the 2011 models. Until then if you got a little sloppy changing the oil filter or rode in bad weather chances your stator would fry. I'm guilty of all of the above and have had to replace the stator almost every year, but I ride a lot. Doc

...here is a quote from another site:

There is a Service Bulletin (M-1107) that reroutes the wiring UP along the front downtubes rather than down along the lower right frame. Cures the issue of oil and water getting into the plug by moving it up. Oil and water in the plug could short out the stator. Happened to mine at about 43000 miles. Rerouted IAW SB and no issues since.
