Broke my Right Hind Paw
« on: June 07, 2011, 06:55:40 PM »

This sucks, but...I walked out into the yard Sunday AM in my mocasins/houseshoes and stepped on something wrong which curled my foot over on it's right side.  Iced it down Sunday, then went to the doc yesterday.  X-Ray revealed a fracture at the base of my 5th Metatarsal (sp?), which is the long bone on the right side of your right foot where it is connected to your ankle.  Went to the Orthopedic guy today...the good news is that all the bones are still lined up right, so no surgery to put a screw in my foot, and my ankle itself is fine.  The bad news is that I've got to wear one of those bootie things to keep my foot from flexing for the next 6 weeks so it will heal, keep it elevated most of the time, and ice it down when not wearing the bootie.

I tried to convince Judi that I could still apply the foot brake and hold the bike up with the bootie on, but that went over like a Baby Ruth in the party Punchbowl, so the bike is going to get a nice long rest in the basement on the jack, connected to the Battery Tender.  It hurts to walk on it, but as long as I keep it stiff (the foot, that is  ;)), the pain is tolerable.  So, I'll do what the doctor ordered, and what Judi insists upon, and hopefully I'll be back to normal (physically) in a few weeks, and get back in the saddle.  The only consolation is that it is SO damn hot here right now that it's almost too hot to even ride unless you can keep moving over 50 mph...but, it's only going to get hotter about the time I'm healed.  >:(

Lessons:  Watch where you step when you have crappy shoes on that don't support your ankle.  Your foot being screwed up is not fun, so take care of both of them when riding.  Gettin' old is hell...

Thank goodness that I'm retired, so have plenty of time on my hands...or in this case...my feets.

Well that sucks!!!!!  Heal fast...and I agree with your better half....let the bike rest since if you put weight on that foot in that boot and something goes wrong or your foot turns you will make it worse--not to mention dropping the bike!!

Terry, you know I love ya man and my only goal is to help.  I know you'll hate it that the bike has to miss the early summer season.  So if you want I'll take the bus down this weekend and ride it home to keep it appropriately exercised for a couple months.  Wouldn't do it if I didn't care....  :2vrolijk_21:

Bad break (pun intended) Terry. Heal quick, but don't push it.  Trust me, that's not one bone you don't want to heal properly, you'll regret it the rest of your life if you don't.  (Don't ask me how I know)

Terry, I feel you pain (literally) as I've broken my feet (4 times) in the same area.  You'll get good with the crutches and you're right about the HOT weather riding right now, but, just quit wearing those flip flops and start trying to act your age, man.     (Use this time to watch TwoLane's latest red bike build pictorial, Jock's coast to coast ride captain's log, speculate on the 2012 bike colors/options, and generally be miserable while others are able to ride those great and cool mountain roads)  Teach Toby the killer bird some manners and try not to get overly 'grumpy' while being handicapped in this temporally manner.  Just natures way of trying to slow you  down...I know it won't work very well with you, but.....keep your positive 'tude and you'll be fine.   Just think how soon MV will be upon us.   :2vrolijk_21: har.  spyder
