I diddnt even consider Amsoil until I read above. So to understand the application correctly, Amsoil 20W-50 in Crankcase & Primary. Amsoil Severe Gear in Tranny?

Please confirm.

In the bikes that I service up here in the mountains that is what goes in most of my friends bikes. I do run Redline Shockproof in my personal bikes. They both have 6 speeds and they do shift very smooth. I don't think you will go wrong with the Amsoil 75/140 in your trannie.

Michael,
Yes, Amsoil 20W-50 in the engine and primary,  then Amsoil 75W-90 SG in the tranny.  You can go with the 75W-140 SG in the tranny,  but amsoil suggests the 75W-90 for Harleys (unless maybe your towing a camper trailer or motor yacht)......Good luck

After all is said and done, if you are religious about maintenance, then all of the listed products will do the job. I'm pretty superstitious and somehow believe that if I faithfully use the same products over and over again it will be a good for the old scoot.
Redline in crankcase and the Redline Shockproof in tranny. Revtech in primary.
I never could get used to the Syn3 in the trans. Too "clunky" for me.
Anyway, regular maintenance is the key.

Ok everybody, this is not meant to stir up any chit, but this is what the oil expert wrote to me about my questions concerning what oils to put in the three holes on a Harley.  He is not saying that the other stuff won't WORK, so don't flame me....these are his recommendations for any Harley with regards to potential perfomance/wear factors (this dude is really a guru on oil technology, so I respect his thoughts):

"As for the Harley.  The Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 for the engine, primary
and transmission is superb.  Along with Amsoil, etc..
The 50 weight works superbly in the transmission; 75W-90 not needed, nor
does it work as well.  75W-90 is formulated specifically for hypoid
gears.  The HD transmission is a straight cut gearset.  Every Peterbilt,
KW, Intl, class eight truck on the highway is running 50W Mobil
synthetic and it lasts hundreds of thousands of miles...  The 50W
actually provides a thicker synthetic oil film than the 75W-90; it is
actually a 45W engine oil in that method of API classification...  So,
yes, ideally, same oil in all three applications.."

This guy's got hard data to back up what he's saying...wear factors, friction coeficiants, etc.

Everybody has their own thoughts on the matter, and if you keep everything maintained, as mentioned above, all will be well....but, he's talking optimum conditions here.  Don't shoot the friggin' messenger.... [smiley=nervous.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Ok...I asked for that one  ::)  Here's a follow up from George:

"Yes, Mobil 1 V-Twin, all three holes...  Interestingly the chief chemist
who developed both MX4T and V-Twin had a total of 17 motorcycles.  5 of
them were Ducati, the rest HD and various other V-Twins.   Thus we are
the beneficiary of a labor of love on his part.  He was given Carte
Blanche thus both oils are rather optimized for these two
manufacturers...."

Convinced me...

MX4T--Tried Auto Zone this AM with no luck.  We have a brand new high end Wal Mart in town so I will try it on my way home.  I hope they have it because I don't want to use a product that you cannot find out on the road.
I personally use Mobil 1 V-Twin in the engine.  Until recently, you could find the full line of Mobil 1 bike oils in all Auto Zones.  Late last summer they stopped carrying it (never could get an answer as to why, just that the decision was made at a higher level), so once I use up the oil I've got stashed I'll have to find it on the web and order it.  One thing about finding it on the road - you can always find the Mobil 1 15W50 at auto parts stores, WalMart, etc.  This was highly rated in the oil study mentioned earlier and should be compatible with the 20W50.  I ran the 15W50 in my previous bike, before V-Twin came out, and it worked great.

I have it from my source that it is blended by Sunoco....the lowest bidder.  Apparently, there were several who tried to get the contract, but did not succeed.

I use Amzoil in all my toys including small engines two and four stroke. Never had a problem in 20 years.
