Ok everybody, this is not meant to stir up any chit, but this is what the oil expert wrote to me about my questions concerning what oils to put in the three holes on a Harley. He is not saying that the other stuff won't WORK, so don't flame me....these are his recommendations for any Harley with regards to potential perfomance/wear factors (this dude is really a guru on oil technology, so I respect his thoughts):
"As for the Harley. The Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W-50 for the engine, primary
and transmission is superb. Along with Amsoil, etc..
The 50 weight works superbly in the transmission; 75W-90 not needed, nor
does it work as well. 75W-90 is formulated specifically for hypoid
gears. The HD transmission is a straight cut gearset. Every Peterbilt,
KW, Intl, class eight truck on the highway is running 50W Mobil
synthetic and it lasts hundreds of thousands of miles... The 50W
actually provides a thicker synthetic oil film than the 75W-90; it is
actually a 45W engine oil in that method of API classification... So,
yes, ideally, same oil in all three applications.."
This guy's got hard data to back up what he's saying...wear factors, friction coeficiants, etc.
Everybody has their own thoughts on the matter, and if you keep everything maintained, as mentioned above, all will be well....but, he's talking optimum conditions here. Don't shoot the friggin' messenger.... [smiley=nervous.gif] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
