Opinions are like A-holes, everybody has one.
« on: June 10, 2011, 03:00:17 PM »

Like the title says, Opinions are like A-holes everybody has one. And I want yours please.

Just got a new Rio Red CVO Ultra Road Glide and am having a chrome inner primary done next week, now here is where your opinion comes into play.  I am considering also doing a chrome starter at the same time, but it is just shy of $600 bucks, and they chrome cover that is made for it is only about $69.

Now with the way the heat shields come down on both sides of the seat, the starter isnt all that noticable back in there, so would you buy the chrome starter, or just a cover and use the remaining money on something else???  On past bikes i used nothing but actual parts, not covers, but I am just having a hard time with a $600 starter that you cant see real good anyway.

So Opinions Please.

Thanks in advance,
TC

I will not help your pocketbook, But I personally hate all "faux" chrome. That means chrome covers that overlay

the original part.

I would rather keep it black than put just a cover on it.   JMHO!

I know it's sacreligious, but I'd forgo both the chrome starter and the somewhat cheesy looking chrome covers I've seen (there may be good ones on the market, I just haven't seen any personally).  The starter is not all that visible anyway, and black is always tasteful and works well with any other colors, especially chrome.  Besides, why buy one when you could just wait and see if the stock one fails.  If it does, have the dealer put in the chrome one under warranty and just pay the difference.  $200 sure beats spending $600 (the stock one retails for $439 MSRP).

Jerry

btw, you don't have to pull the primary cover to change a starter on the '07 and later bikes, so there is less of a reason to do it all at the same time.  With the old style jackshaft starters, you had to pull the outer primary to remove the jackshaft bolt and the starter, so folks tried to combine the starter with other primary work.  Just thought I'd mention it if anyone didn't realize this had been changed.

I'm not a fan of covers either. Just something else to go wrong and in this case for very little bling gain.

I went with the chrome Starter and the chrome inner primary (and then sold the stock black starter and stock inner primary on Ebay to recoup some of the "chrome cost"...   :P

The msrp of the starter is $429.95.  I removed mine and replaced it with a chrome starter when my bike was new.  I sold the Black take-off (new) starter for $325.00 on Ebay.

There is less value to the inner primary.  Memory is I got something less than $50.00 for it...

I am doing a chrome inner primary because I have to have it off when I change my gearing. I would use the money towards a gearing change seeings as you are going to be in there. Just my .02

Love your SG Fast380.  And you sparked my interest on  the gear change, what are you going with and why??  I am new to the world of the 110 and 6 spd. Had an 05 Road Glide with a 95" in it that ran great. But had hoped the MOCO would come out with a RG Ultra and they did and then topped it with a CVO, so I took the plunge!!!

I have done the Vance and Hines Power Duals, V&H Mufflers and a SE Race Tuner. Always looking for more power though so if you would take the time to explain, it would be appreciated!!!

I definately recommend doing the gearing change while you have it apart!
I just did the 30 T pulley and the 139 T belt last week. I would spend the starter money on this as well. It is all that the guys on this site said it was. Thanks everyone for the info.  :2vrolijk_21:

A very fitting subject like...

I'd take the $600, put $400 back in your pocket, and replace all the bolts you can see with 12pt stainless.  You would get a lot more visual bang for the buck than the chrome starter.  FWIW

Don't forget about Hot Toppers. You can do the whole bike yourself in about 30 minutes and a kit only costs about $110.00. I have used them since I got my first HD in 1995 and I put a set on my 09SEUC as soon as I got it. No torque wrench, no locktite, I still have most of the original ones on my 95 Heritage and they look like new since they are made of plastic hence no rust.CAHDBIKER
