« on: June 13, 2011, 02:06:54 AM »

Anyone know the O ring sizes for the oil/fluid drain plugs? Want to grab a few sets at work this shift.
Thanks.

It's about the same size as the small end of the drain plug.

It is a # 013 and the size is 7/16" X 9/16".  Around a quarter a piece at a good hardware store.

Huh?    ???

Both the drain plug and the mating sealing surface are designed to seal against an o'ring.  To each his own, I guess...

No taper of a pipe thread fitting there.  Teflon tape has an awful chance of putting string residue in to the oil cavity after repeated uses also.  If were going to do it wrong would at least use paste rather than tape before deforming the plug and hole to make a seal.

Never had the string residue problem and no issues deforming the plug and hole. This technique may not be a good idea for everyone and probably should not have suggested it. YES, you can cause problems you stated but I hoped most people had enough common sense not to wrap a half roll of the stuff. So I'll retract my Teflon tape suggestion and say "Teflon Tape works fine but use only if you graduated from the School of Teflon Tape with high honors"  I was going to suggest Duct Tape, but I'll stop while I'm ahead  :P  And I'm not sure about that paste stuff, it could potentially contaminate the oil with left over residue  :nervous:

I had to get the use of it stopped here at the plant I work at...We will only use pst (sealant)  because the lunkheads here will use 20 rolls of teftape on a 1/2 thread..

I had a aux lube oil pump die a slow death, filters full of tape.

Not a spendy to repair but spendy to take the machine offline to repair...like 35k per hour at that time.
I use orings myself where applicable..

Ditto what Cvobiker said.....I've used it on drain plugs since the 60s and NEVER had a problem.  I don't put tape on the first two threads of the plug and 1-2 wraps max, depending on the tape thickness.  Never a problem; never a leak.
And YES, I am a graduate from the STT, not sure of the high honors though....LOL!
