Yes, Harley once again did a bang up job "engineering" a change to the bikes.  And just like with all their other f - ups, they found a way to turn it into a profit maker for them.  See attachment, which is their answer to the problem.

Yeah, I have difficulty with the new 'improved' design on my '11 ruse.  Like others have said - never any problem on my '99, '06 or '07, but this thing is a royal pita.  I have found that if I initially put the nozzle as far down into the tank as it will go and pump really slow it doesn't spit back.  When it reaches the point that the auto shutoff cuts the fuel then I move the nozzle up in the tank and continue filling.  This seems to work the best of all the techniques I have tried.

Buddies say they fill their's while in the saddle with the bike upright with no problem.  But heck I'd probably wind up with a crotch full of gas, lol.  So I am not trying that!

It is.... not the first time Harley has copied, took advantage of a product they saw people were buying. ;) ;D Case in point... a lot of people (us) were buying Garmin Zumo GPS's and all of a sudden Harley starts selling them and branding them w/the "Bar & Shield".

Ultrafxr, after several gasoline baths I finally started using your fill technique on the 09'. No problems on other bikes. I think I remember on an old Orange County Chopper show the guys trying to promote those "pump n fill" things. They didn't look like they worked that well and I wasn't motivated to get one even thou the chicks in the segment looked pretty good. I didn't want the thing in the bike making everything smell like gas, I was already doing that with my t-shirt. Anybody else remember that or was I dreaming.

dbevins, on my 09SEUC I fill it on the side stand until the nozzel clicks (I am in CA. and they have the rubber cover on the nozzel, some are a new design and are less hassel). Once it clicks I take a look and if it looks pretty close to full I leave it alone. Sometimes I pull back the nozzel cover and put a little more in, but it is not really worth the extra 2 tenths of a gallon versus a spill. CAHDBIKER

Don't know what the problem is. :nixweiss: I always fill sitting the saddle and had a little "spitting" from the filler first time I filled the bike and then just modified my technique to what Jerry does and haven't had any issues. Always fill to just below the neck.  ;)

That's a California thing, not a Harley problem. CA has the dumbest gas nozzles in the world. In most of the US you don't need those orange collars.

Dood, it's good that you gave the product endorsement. Paul Sr. sure wouldn't know if it worked or not. All I've ever seen him do is stand around and bitch.

That's a California thing, not a Harley problem. CA has the dumbest gas nozzles in the world. In most of the US you don't need those orange collars.

Michael, it's worse in Cali due to the evap emissions crap on the pumps, but it's also a problem in the rest of the country.  It was somewhat of a problem on the 5 gallon tanks, but much worse when they changed to the 6 gallon.  If you find a pump nozzle that allows you to throttle the flow way back, then neither is a big problem.  Unfortunately, most pumps I've encountered over the past 10 years seem to have a hair trigger and don't allow for a slow flow.  And when you run across those types of pumps, the design of the filler tube and high backbone in the tank conspire to cause splash back as the tank gets close to full.  Shoving the nozzle further into the tank in the hopes that the auto shut off will kill flow before it splashes back might work, but then when you try to top it off by backing the nozzle out you still have to deal with the hair trigger problem.

In my old industry, we went through issues over the years with fuel filling complaints, either slow to fill (fast fill would kick out the pump prematurely), incomplete fill, splash back, or other issues.  Unlike H-D, we spent the time and money to redesign things like filler pipes and tank venting systems to solve the problems.  I don't see why H-D can't do the same, versus selling some cheap piece of plastic you have to carry with you (and store on the bike) to help solve their problem.  It never ceases to amaze me how Harley customers constantly and willingly put up with stuff that they would never accept from other companies.

Couldn't find it now but someone previously posted a Youtube video of Mikey Teutel making a hash of it with this fuel fill widget.  If I remember correctly the OE for the part had OCC build a bike.  Story with the video was that Mikey tried to use it and it wasn't Mikey proof.  Spilled gas everywhere.

I remember the episode.  The original "new" episode showing Mikey failing miserably using the device.  Subsequent reruns of the episode edited the failure out...   :huepfenlol2:  :huepfenlol2:

For the few times I've been at the pumps with my 2011.5, I haven't had any problems.  I've actually been quite happy at the pumps.  That may be because my '07 CVO RoadKing was a huge PITA to fill.  I used to double up the wax on the right side just to account for the fuel splash.  Seemed to be very much dependant upon the station (some much better than others, including CA).

I'm also still working on the "buns of steele" needed on the super long hauls, so I don't mind the extra minute or so standing to keep the splash down.  My knees also thank me....
