Question for someone in the know.
« on: June 17, 2011, 06:37:32 AM »

I recently purchased a 2011 CVO FLTRSEU and had the Vance and Hines Power Duals, and V&H High Output slip-ons installed with a SE Race Tuner.

Ok here is my question, What would cause the left side pipe to have a burnt residue all around the muffler tip inside and out but not the right side???

Looks almost like it is running to rich or something, the residue will not wipe off it needs to be polished off with chrome polish, it take a few hundred miles to be noticeable, but it keeps coming back, but again only on the left side. Do think the dealer may have something wrong in the map they loaded, or could it be a bigger issue that is engine related??

It is at the dealer now having a chrome inner primary and starter installed and I showed then the problem and they are suppose to check it out, but we all know how most dealers deal with someting like this, "Oh that is normal on these 110"s"  although I would have a hard time beliving that, and I know you guys have probably forgot more about this stuff than the average HD wrench at a dealer will ever know.

Thanks in Advance for any help you can offer!!!!!

Defiantly not tuned proper and I wouldn't just brush this off. Find a good tuner as soon as you can or install the Revolution Performance EMS and never worry about a tune again . :2vrolijk_21:

Being that he has a 2011 bike, and has already purchased new exhaust, he may not have the correct O2 sensor bungs for the EMS. He has already purchased the SERT so it would probably be easier and cheaper to find a good tuner for that.

EMS supplies correct 02 sensors with their package but I'm not sure if they have a 2011 release yet so he may be out of luck with EMS....(call Rev Perforance I know they are working on a 2011 release)
In the long run (l learned the hard way) especially if you plan further engine mods, it would be cheaper to go EMS. Most people don't consider the $$$ they spend on dyno tunes over the course of their bike ownership. Add all these dyno tune $$ up and you'll find that you can buy several EMS packages. In other words, you save a lot of cash. The EMS works as advertised, and probably better than a lot of 'so called' professional dyno tuners... And this isn't my opionion, but facts I've read from several 'write-up's on the EMS system  :2vrolijk_21:

You don't have to sell me on the EMS---I already own it:) However--it does use the larger O2 sensors and requires on 09 style headpipe with the larger bungs up by the heads and not down by the trans as the '10's and '11 have.

EMS does not have a 2011 realease at this point.  Header pipes for the 2011 models do not have the right size O2 bungs in the pipe, nor are they in the right location for the EMS application...not a huge deal to fix that issue, but it's still something to consider.

Concerning the OP's original issue...you dealer may know exactly what they are doing with regards to tuning your bike, but quite frankly, I'd be surprised if they did.  Having a Dyno and a tech who has been sent to training class on how to use it does not mean they know WTF they are doing.  I know of more than one occasion where dealers have just put a MAP in the ECM that's "close" and called it good enough without actually tuning the bike.

Hey
I'm away at moment using i-phone so limited answer. - but
I had same issue . Left pipe blacked up
And right pipe clean .
A good tune helped - but didn't get rid of
problem . Tuner guy checked it all . Right
pipe gas velocity is q lot higher so blows
Through - whereas left pipe is a lot slower
and blacks up .
I'm still trying to sort this out too . Will
Keep you posted . May change to true duals???
Will post pick when get home next week.

I think your bike is fine. All the exhaust gasses are blended at the collector or X.
The right side muffler has greater flow and less length resulting in higher temps, = less soot.
The left side has less flow, longer length, lower temps,= more soot.
What worries me is your seating position. This isn't something you should be able to see.  ;D

LOL!!!!
Only time I can see it is parked, but a riding buddy was saying he could smell oil when following me. The residue doesn't smell like oil, more like fuel to me.. And in checking the oil it hasn't been low, so it isnt burning it.

Scheduling it for a Tune with a guy who is supposedly a SERT Guru name Ship of Skips Cycles in Winchester, VA. so hopefully he get it tweeked for me.
