MOCO Headaches
« on: June 17, 2011, 02:06:13 PM »

 :worthless:
Another failure at 14k and Harley will not help out.
Extended warranty does not cover shocks, after several visits the dealer finally figured out the problem.
The heads have been replaced twice, the Jugs powder coat is chipping, throttle grip replaced and a couple of other small items.
Man I'm getting discourged, paid for top of the line bike, extra warranty and MOCO says so sorry at 14k.
F'ing unbelievable another $500.

The dealer has a kitty that they get from the moco if they wanted to help you.   I would go back to the dealer and see what they will do for you from that fund they get since they were the ones who were unable to find the problem to begin with as you said finally figured it out.

First, I agree with the advice given by Unbalanced.  If you had a problem that the dealer didn't diagnose properly during the warranty period but conveniently "found" once the warranty had expired, I think it would be a good idea to sit down with the honcho of that dealership with your copies of the work orders (you do have documentation, I hope) and state your case, then ask him to help make it right.  Between the goodwill adjustment funds mentioned by Unbalanced and the dealership's own stake in this situation, I'd expect a sizeable discount on the repair if they don't cover it completely.

Second, if they stiff you, I would not buy the next set of shocks from H-D or that dealer.  The aftermarket has better stuff at competitive prices, and the only way H-D and it's dealers will ever get the message on this sort of thing is when enough people quit letting them make another profit on their mistakes and poor quality.  JMHO of course.

Thanks guys, the warranty was over already, so the mis-diagnosis really didn't affect anything, it just made me wait that much longer.
The kicker is after 14k I have to install new shocks, should not happen especially after buy a $40k bike.
Do you guys think I can get after market shocks cheaper and install them myself for less then $500?
Or should I let the dealer do it? who is the best aftermarket supplier of these shocks?
I can call them tomorrow and tell them to put the bike back together and probably have to pay some labor, probably $200.
Thanks
Tom

A shock change should fall easily within their likely one hour minimum shop labor charge.  If you're paying labor again for diagnostic time that should be yet another conversation about their failed efforts to diagnose a problem in prior efforts.

Some may bitch about having to pay shop time for them to even attempt to find a problem.  But that time is legitimate.  Problems aren't always apparent and finding them can take time.  But repeated failed efforts eventually have to fall on them.

If you've got a jack to raise the bike off the ground safely you can change shocks.  Not a difficult chore.  If you're already paying them a couple hundred bucks, however, there's not a fair case they can make for not bolting shocks on for you as they button things up.

On what basis does your dealer say the shocks are not covered by the ESP?  The ESP is a contract with "covered repairs" and specified exclusions from covered repairs.  I haven't had an ESP for several years so its terms may have changed since I had one, but is there a specific exclusion for shocks, or is the dealer relying on a general exclusion?

The ESP doesn't involve MOCO; it's a contract sold by the dealer (not MOCO) and underwritten by a 3rd party.  In the absence of a specific exclusion from coverage for shocks, my impression is the dealer is screwing you and avoiding submitting a claim to the 3rd party underwriter of the ESP to avoid providing parts and labor at substantially less than retail prices (i.e. the dealer's compensation from the 3rd party for doing covered repairs under the ESP are not at regular retail rates; similar to the dealer's reimbursement rates for warranty work from the MOCO are less than regular retail) in order to provide them to you at full retail.

I for damn sure wouldn't buy the stock HD air shocks if I had to replace them on my own dime.  There are way too many better products out there, IMO.

If the problem began before the warranty expired and you presented the vehicle for warranty repairs before the warranty expired but the problem was misdiagnosed by the dealer, the warranty should still cover the repairs since the vehicle was presented during the warranty period. Also as stated above the ESP is a contract and unless the suspension system is excluded, the ESP should cover the repairs beyond the original warranty period.

Carl I understand that it's a third party issue, but shocks at 14k?? Give me a break.
I have to check the ESP, MOCO and dealer both said they were not coverd, I have to find a way to check, but either way the failure should have never happened, but chit happens but MOCO should have done the honorable thing.

 :confused5:
I was the second owner of a 2001 RK Classic.  It was still under the original warranty when one of the shocks started leaking and they replaced it under warranty.  No problem.   The orig. owner had purchased the extended warranty and I paid the slight fee to have it transferred to me....not sure if the extended has different terms and conditions that came into play here. :nixweiss:

Do they leak or did someone air them up with an air compressor and blow them?

Still haven't seen an answer as to what is supposedly wrong with the shocks.  Are they leaking air, leaking oil, or just worn out?  And considering how lousy the stock shocks are, how would you know if they were worn out or not?

Things like shocks and brake pads and other "wear" items aren't usually covered under the warranty or the ESP if they just wear out.  Broken seals however would probably still be covered under the ESP; I would ask that dealer to show me in writing if he says it isn't covered, or I would call the administrator of the ESP directly.

Definitely do not buy a replacement set of stock shocks from H-D.  Check into Progressive Suspension, Works Performance, etc. for much better shocks.  If you want the stock shocks for some reason, get a set on ebay from one of the  roughly million folks out there that took the stockers off and upgraded shortly after buying their bikes.
