tach and speedometer quit working periodically
« on: June 19, 2011, 09:00:21 AM »

I was wondering if anyone would know what would cause my tack and speedometer to quit working while riding down the highway. It happened twice so far this year while doing some highway traveling. I replaced the battery but it happened again. The lights on the speedometer ( battery, engine, security, etc) also lit up. Once I shut the bike off, it fired right up and everything worked fine. I am assuming some sort of electrical gremlin somewhere. I have an 08 FXDSE2 and was curious if anyone out there had a similar problem and what the fix may be. Thanks.

I haven't had that problem but have had wacky things happen due to loose fuses. Check to see that all your fuses are pushed in all the way and tight fitting.

I had a similar problem when the battery ground wire was loose.

Thanks guys but the fuses were good and the battery wire was fine also. One guy told me it happened to him periodically and he thought it was something to do with the security system. I will keep trying to figure it out. It works great so far but I don't want the bike to die on me sometime I happen to be in the middle of nowhere's. Wish me luck, I will post the solution if I can figure it out.

Not sure where but I read about the same problem and a no start problem. The cause was RFI from either a cell or microwave tower close to the bike that interfered with the security fob signal.
I have had and still have the problem even after replacing the voltage regulator and the speed sensor in the transmission also separated, cleaned and dielectric greased ALL the connectors on the bike.
I'm trying to narrow it down to the areas where it happens.

had the same issue on my '06 . believe it or not they changed out the radio and it was fixed. I believe they told me that the radio is in series with the tach & speedo and can cause the tach & speedo to do funny things. Mine would be going down the road both would quit , engine light came on but he bike ran great They threw everything else at it , new ECM, battery.new  cables and god knows what else. before they changed out the radio.  Might call Tony at Iron Cross of you are out of warranty otherwise warranty will handle the radio or should...Greg

OOPS,
My signature starts " 210, 110 CVO mufflers" that's all that is CVO, just exhaust. Sorry if it through you off. My bike is a TC Softail Custom.
The RFIs are, I'm guessing, from a Cell or Microwave tower. No radio on the bike.
Thanks for clarifying there are RFI problems.

Well Greg it sounds like you had the exact same problem I am having but the only difference is I don't have a radio on my Dyna. I wish the fix was that simple. My next attempt is to simply change the battery in my FOB. Not sure if that will accomplish anything but it is probably due anyway. Friggin electrical gremlins, booo!
