Thunderheaders for 2011 CVOSG???
« on: June 22, 2011, 08:50:33 PM »

I will hopefully be taking ownership of my new bike in a few months. So With a little time to kill, I have been reading every post I can on this site!  Without question you guys are wealth of information and help!  That said, I am hoping someone might be able to offer a little insight on this one...

I am looking into the true dual Thunderheaders for my bagger.  The website unfortunately does not provide much information into the actual specs of the exhaust.  Does anyone here know some specifics like O2 sensor bung size, fitment issues with the 2011 SG and performance?  Also, it looks like they have produced a new exhaust with "cross under" design.  Is this the same idea as an "X-Pipe?"  Also, are the ThunderHeader tips removable/interchangeable with other styles?  That's probably the only "eh" factor I have about these pipes.

I have always LOVED the exhaust note of the Thunderheaders and personally, I do not consider them obnoxiously loud....so I really have no concerns on that front.  But I have been doing a lot of research into the first mods I would like to do and compatibility seems to be one of my biggest concerns.

Thanks in advance for any info!!!!

LOL.....BTW....is the 2011CVOSG a Throttle by wire or something different?  Dang if I can find out anywhere!!!!!  Yes...I am the newb of all newbs to HD.

I agree with the fact that the Thunderheader website sucks for info. It says they fit 2010-2011 and they show a different pipe for 09, so the 10-11 O2 sensors should be in the right place as far as fitment goes. The cross-under design is referring to the front header pipe going under the bike in front of the rear wheel and exiting on the left. The balance tube is their verison of the "X" pipe to balance the exhaust fron right to left. Not exactly the same design, but it will mix both cylinders exhaust to balance things out for low end torque.

Could not find any info on the muffler and end caps on their site--time to make a phone call.

As for the Throttle By wWire--yes the '11 FLHXSE2 has that.

Hope this helps.....

Thanks for the info MJB!

Definitely a lot of research yet to do.  I really hope I can make these things work and get the performance out of them I want.  That, and I hope they do not look completely tarded given the small cones on the exhaust in combination with the extended bags and rear fender!  I will probably give them a call sometime soon to see if I can get some more specific information.  In researching ECMs, it appears that a wide band O2 sensor is the way to go, however, as much as I may love these pipes, I do not love the idea of having to weld on new bungs or make any major modifications to these pipes to make em fit my needs.

Speaking of ECMs, I have been looking into the EMS unit by Rev Performance, and for someone who knows nothing about tuning a motor, this seems like an excellent option.  Any opinions about this particular unit?

You could buy the 09 pipe--it will fit the '10 and '11's--the only difference is O2 sensor location and size. I put an 09 catless headpipe on my '11 so I could buy the Rev Perf EMS. Bike starts and runs great..plenty of power. It ran a little too hot, so I sent the ECM back and they made a few adjustments and it seems to be better, but I haven't sat in traffic in the summer yet. Other than that, I haven't heard of any other issues with the product. The big thing right now is that you have to buy an earlier ECM since they haven't cracked the code on the 2011 ECM's yet. I didn't want to wait (since they have been saying it will be ready in 3 weeks since Feb.) so I bought one directly from them and they progranmmed it and sent it right out. There are plenty of threads on this forum about the ECM issue.

If you want to install and get out and ride--this is the option for you.

The EMS scares me because they physically re-program the entire ECM. If there is an issue on the road, your e-ffed. Most around here including me are happy with the TTS Mastertune. Similar to the HD tuner (SEPST), it simply re-flashes your ECM with a different map, and isn't physically attached to the bike (like a Power Commander). Also, the TTS is very DIY friendly, and most (including me) will tell you that the map you would get from Steve at Fullsac is bang on.

I run Thunderheader on a number of bikes for many years but now use an exhaust that looks and performs better on the SE Street Glide.  Yes, they are obnoxiously loud and unless they've changed their design, they do not have a removable end cap.....it's all one piece.  And yes, the small exhaust will definately have a "something's just not right" look, being much smaller than the 4" exhaust that comes on our bikes.

You may want to get next to a 110" that has the Fullsac X pipe and 2 baffles.....better performance, looks a whole lot better and a whole lot cheaper!   Use the savings for other mods. :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks guys!!!
@ North Star...That TTS is another one that I have been eyeballing.  I have read a lot of positive feedback on that system.  The only thing that scared me was all the "Tech" talk that came with it as far as dialing it in and making adjustments.  That's where the appeal of the EMS system really came from...truly plug and play.  Of course that is also a downside as you have no way to make adjustments should you need to.

I know sound if very subjective, but I honestly don't find the Thunderheaders obnoxious.  I definitely agree they are loud, but I guess its the pitch of the pipes that makes me feel as though they are not obscene.

I do think these things are gonna look terrible on the bike though.  Anyone have an idea of what may be the closest sounding alternative?  I am really interested in those Fullsac exhausts and will take you up on your advice and see if I can find a set to listen to, thanks JCZ.
