Why did you use the heavy instead of the superlight 75-90W?

I had been using the heavy and liked it well. I have now been using Amsoil heavy syn. gear lube and I have not noticed a difference. As far a s why it was recommended here on this site when I first got my bike. Much better than the syn3

Less chance of break down under high pressure. It and Amsoil 75/140 are all I use. Shifts are much smoother.

Redline recommends the Heavy for the H-D trans.  Baker also recommends the Heavy.

Thanks Jerry I know I can always count on you. But believe it or not when I got my Baker they recommended Bel-Ray. I'm not sure when Redline Shockproff hit the market. So it may have been before then. I have only used Bel-Ray in the initial fill for that trannie before switching to Redline. Once I used Redline it was hard to switch back to a lighter oil.

DAWG,

I'm not sure either, but Baker changed to Redline sometime before last year.  Noticed it when I was surfing their site looking for info on the DD6 last year.

I use the heavy in both our bikes.  I took the Fatboy in for the easy pull clutch and the HD tech called me back and said I had water in my tranny oil.  It is a small dealer and hadn't seen the strawberry consistency or color before.  He said it really clung to the gears and clutch cover.   For as thick as it is, it shifts fine in 35 degree weather.

Which one are you using?

SuperLight
Light
Heavy

I am still using HD synthetics.  I just had my 5K service done.  The dealership gave me a free oil change with HD synthetic and detail for something they screwed up.  I was thinking of using Amsoil synthetic for my next service.  Is Redline a better product?? [smiley=confused5.gif]??
Any info what be greatly appreciated!!

jimp,

I searched through my old stored emails, but couldn't find the one I received from Redline many years back.  They stated that their recommendation for H-D transmissions was the Shockproof Heavy.  The following descriptions are from their web site:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Heavy ShockProof
A unique lubricant containing a suspension of solid microscopic particles as an extreme pressure agent--unique solid dispersion which cushions gear teeth to help prevent tooth breakage and allows the use of lower viscosities. Recommended for heavily-loaded racing differentials and transmissions, Off Road racing and problem gearboxes. The viscosity characteristics allow the lubricant to resist throwoff and provide a film thickness similar to a 75W250 grade, while providing the same low fluid friction as an SAE 75W90.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
LightWeight ShockProof
A unique gear oil designed to lubricate racing transmissions and transaxles which see serious loads (not recommended for most syncro-type transmissions). It has excellent low-temperature flow which allows easier shifting when cold. May be used to obtain maximum power transfer in racing differentials which do not see high temperatures. Similar to a 75W140 gear oil, but with the lower internal friction of an SAE 30 motor oil.

Used in two-stroke and four-stroke motocross transmissions (often mixed in equal parts with SuperLight ShockProof™ Gear Oil).

Used in most road-racing differentials with moderate power and dogring racing transaxles.
