New Guitar, long time no play, advice sought
« on: June 26, 2011, 06:50:04 AM »

Picked up a nice Gretsch G5120 Electromatic Hollow Body (orange of course) recently off craigslistmaine. Brand new and paid 1/2 the going rate at the local guitar shop.(BuckDancer's Choice)  Ended up buying a brand new Fender Blues Deluxe reissue to power it up. Got a hell of deal on that and a hard shell Gretsch case for the guitar from the shop. S'anyway, it's been 30 years since I sold my beloved Gibson Acoustic Electric to buy my 1st house and out of practice does not even begin to describe it. I've got a young cousin (18) who blew me away at a family outing here UPTA CAMP last Sunday with a nice set of Jazz/Blues riffs but I could not even begin to follow him. What I'm seeking here is advice on a couple of lesson books to pick up. I read music as easily as I read the writing on this page and have no problem playing single notes in most any position. But chords - - ahhhhhhhh the chords, they just don't come. I put the fingers on the fretboard and awful sounds come out. So any of you guitar masters out there, I'd appreciate some advice on the best lesson books to pick up for chords, beginning with the basic A, F,G, etc and up into the more difficult flats and sharps. Would really like to get back some of the skill I had all those years ago and the playing is incredible therapy for my arthritic hands. Thanks in advance to anyone who can toss out some crumbs of info

I will say I'm a better guitar player than you are comedian

:huepfenlol2:  Hey, at least you got him to make his first post in nearly a year. ::)

I can't help you with the guitar lesson books, but I've been taking piano lessons for 2 years now as a show of support and to encourage my daughter who's 3 years into it now, and I can tell you it's a lot harder to pick this stuff up as an adult than when I took guitar lessons also 30 years ago. :o   I'm still having a blast with it, though.   Just don't try to do too much, too soon, or it can be discouraging.  I wish I was a lot better and was able to show my 11 year-old a thing or two, but that day will never come as long as she stays with it!

It's neat to hear you picked it back up!  Have fun with it!

I have played guitar for 45 years.  Lead still does not come easily to me no doubt because I was always the rhythm player and singer in the band.  Brian and Joe are right, it just takes time and practice.  You can get an app for your phone showing you as many cords as you will ever need to learn.  I use jam box on my Droid for the occasional of the wall chord.  It also has a tuner which sometimes comes in handy.  There have been times when I was resting and it is frustrating.  I am sure practicing 90 minutes a day things will come back quickly  Good luck!  I am thinking that we need a CVO band at 1 of our get togethers!

Envy all of you that can do this, even a little.  Was never easy for me.  Apparently just not wired that way.  Would love to be able to play something other than the radio.  But it's not in my skill set.

Thanks to you folks who provided me the links. My cousin came up with a video that is a pretty good start as well. I can pop in in the DVD player and pick away along with the instructor who takes his time to explain each chord and fingering positions etc very clearly. I've got plenty to go on now. Don't expect reports that a previously unknown guitar player has popped up on America's Got Talent, I'm just doing this for my own enjoyment. I ain't never gonna be Clapton or Stevie Ray Vaughn even if I practice all day long for the rest of my life. Those guys were born with a gift. All I've got going is some inante talent for remembering what I hear and stubborness.   ;)
