Drive belt tension on '11 SESG
« on: June 26, 2011, 02:16:05 PM »

My '09 flhx has a good bit of play in the belt...maybe 1/4 inch and when touched seems easy to move that 1/4 inch. on my 11 sesg the belt is VERY tight...to the slight touch it doesnt have any play, but put a little effort in it and it's less than 1/8 inch.

Is the cvo too tight..? I've never had one that tight..

Unless they changed specs recently and I missed it, 1/8" is way too tight.  Of course, unless you have a calibrated finger that applies exactly 10 pounds of force, you really need the tool to check it accurately, and you need to check it at several different points along the belt to allow for variations in the pulleys or the belt.

Last set of specs I saw showed normal deflection on a SG as 1/4" - 5/16" since 2007.  If that is no longer the spec, hopefully someone with a later manual will correct me.

The latest from Harley is a loose7/16" to 1/2"cold. it sounds to loose but after ten miles its tight again.
there was a lot warranty from snapped belts. most dealers do not loosen them up at set up.  axil

So I bought tool...the directions state to apply it to the belt jsut before the lower stone gaurd. that seems too far forward... :nixweiss:

the picture in the instructions also looks to be an older bike with a shorter gaurd than what the touring bikes have.

is that really the right spot..? Seems a little more center might be better...

What you're looking for is the midpoint between the output shaft of the trans and the rear axle.  And at least on the older models the belt guard had a nice little window molded into it at that point, with little lines every 1/8" you could use to measure deflection if you didn't want to dig out a real scale.  I haven't actually looked on a current model, but I just assumed they still had that same setup on the belt guard.  :nixweiss:

Axle adjustment is always a small nuisance.  Getting it just where you want it.  Pulling hard enough on the right often induces a little wiggle on the left.  Or at least it used to.  Then the tool whore gene kicked in again.

Awhile back stumbled across this on ebay.

Put it on the end of the axle.  Adust the tool for belt tightness.  Then go around to the other side and torque.  It even makes the tightening part easier as you don't have to be wing spanned across the rear of the bike trying to hold on one side while tighting the other.

(no one lust after the chrome ends on the axle)

Got it from this eBay listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/160569774913

His asking price is $50 but he accepts offers.  He turned down a couple of lower offers but sold it when I was buying for $42.50.

It's one of those "every little bit helps" kind of things.  Chromed axles in the SEEG and SERG so couldn't not do the project.

Oh, and yeah, that is a red powder coated E-Clip on the SEEG.  Just to complement things a bit....  ::)

Now that's getting into the 'show-bike' phaze......you'll have to enter this brace of red bikes into a show.  :-* spyder

Nah, that was just doing pieces because it was easy and I was there.  If it was really a show bike it'd be like PJ's with the frame, swingarm, cases and everything else done.  Geez, I think PJ even had the inside of the frame tubes polished with stripper's panties.  That's just a perfect bike.

Didn't know that, but not surprised at all.  Yep, a fine example of attention to detail.  ;) spyder
