States with lowest taxes on Car/Truck/SUV tires ?
« on: July 01, 2011, 12:16:46 PM »

Which states have the lowest combined taxes on tires for cars/trucks/SUVs ? Seems that the price of tires from state to state can vary by as much as $40 (per tire) I bought a set of big off road Cooper raised white letter tires for my Dodge Power Ram here in Maine for the same price they want for 40k pro-rated blackwalls for my Ford Ranger in California.

Any comments ?

We are lucky here in Oregon we have no sales tax  :2vrolijk_21: not sure if there are any taxes before they are put on the shelf for sale.

I don't know about tires but it cost me something like $340.00 to register my 08 SERK in Tax free NH.  There are so many different tax situations between one State and another it's hard to keep track of them. One of the main reasons for border wars between States that don't have a sales tax like us, they just nail us on property taxes.  Massachusetts pretty well empties out on weekends, either going to Maine or Northern NH, but I'm sure you see evidence of that on the highways if you have to use them on weekends.  This being a Holiday weekend the highways should be wicked, I just changed my riding plans.

Any near collisions with the Moose population up there?

Not sure what you are actually talking about

there are individual state sales taxes (that are state to state)
there are Federal excise taxes that are uniform across all states
and there are duties on tires imported

That is all I know of?

So what you're saying is that a tire I buy in Maine should cost the same in CA excepting the 2% difference in sales tax ?

If you're right then the tire dealers in CA are screwin people royally. I can buy the tire my wife paid $100 for mounted and balanced today in San Diego here in Maine for $64. That's a ripoff.

Yes, the differences are geographic in natureand there are not uniform wholesale prices.

Different markets dictate stratagies

I belong to a huge buying coop and one of the issues we have, is the group disrupts markets by expanding to the rust belt.

The northeast is a very competitive market and by moving in Ohio they upset pricing.

Cost of operations have to be much more expensive in CA than Maine.

It is not taxes, unless CA has imposed some hidden taxes.

I buy mine on line through Tire Rack and they normall ship from NV or AZ. No sales tax, and normally either no or ground UPS to the installer. Installers are listed on their website and you just drop ship to them and schedule install date. The dealers are not wild about the program as they don't get to mark them up, etc.

Last set of shocks and struts I got through Amazon and again no sales tax (yet) and I did find fewer and fewer shops want to install these types of items if not purchased there. I asked 2 or 3 why and only one would say they don't make any money on installs only, one did say it was a 'warranty issue'.  :nixweiss:

Here's how all this started. My wife needed one new tire on her Ford Ranger XLT Extended cab (2WD) without delay and the rest of the set of four shortly. The one tire had a nail right where the sidewall joins the tread. The plan was to replace the one tire now and get the rest of the set soon. The vehicle came with nice Goodyear raised white letter tires. So, I sent her to Discount Tire in Poway CA where we live because they sell Goodyear. 1st thing they did was tell her the tires were discountinued. Then they bullchitted her that a set of raised white letter tires would be over $650 (more on that in a moment) They tried to sell her a set of 40k blackwall BF Goodrich for $450 a set. I paid that for a set of Cooper All Terrain white letter tires for my full size Dodge Power Ram here in Maine - - which is what was the catylst for this thread. So anyway, I logged onto Goodyear's website. Not only are the tires that came on our 08 Ranger still being made, they are the OEM recommended tire for the vehicle. Lie #1 from Discount Tire. Goodyear has a rebate program going that the dealer will try to tell you is for on-line orders only Lie #2 from Discount Tire. The selling dealer can download a coupon for you, fill in his dealer section and you mail it in a get $40 per tire or a whopping $160 for a set of four. SO now, the tires my wife needed, tried to buy, should have been easy to obtain but were made unvailable to her by a authorized Goodyear dealer can be bought for $500 for a set of four. These are 50,000 mile tires with a road hazard warranty, all applicable taxes and disposal fees plus mounting and balancing AND available from a tire shop less than 1 mile from our home in Poway. I called them, verified everything I found on Goodyear's website, was given two names, one the guy I spoke with (one of two store managers) plus the other store manager's name. They took down my name, wrote up the order. The guy even downloaded the rebate coupon while he was on the phone to me. Bottom line, is that Discount Tire is a total ripoff business OR, this is just one more example of how auto service businesses try to hose women because the vast majority of women simply are not into this level of detail like guys are. No disrespect intened just the way it is. Sure gets my BP up though. Don't know if this story will save anyone money, but we all know it pays to do your homework.
