Centramatic Balance
« on: July 02, 2011, 11:02:06 AM »

Just checking to see if anybody has tried centramatic balance system.
Not able to keep weights on my front wheel, the weights that came on the bike came off and put a few dents in my front fender.
Dealer is putting a new fender on.
they also re balance the wheel but those weights also came off, I found them laying next to my tire.
I'm afraid that they my us some real strong glue and the next time i change tires the  weights will pull paint

Have you tried ceramic balls?   "technically ceramic beads"

but I prefer the rock solid balls to keep the wheels straight.................

about 4 - 6 oz inside the tire should work.

From their website I see that centramatic is a device that attatches to the outside of the wheel.  You might want to take a look at dyna beads.  Several members here have used them with great praise.  They seem to work on the same principle but the beads go  inside the tire.  I am in the process of replacing my tires and installing them.

I'm not understanding why folks can't keep their stick-on weights stuck.  It's a simple matter of thoroughly cleaning the surface of the wheel with a solvent (isopropyl alcohol is usually sufficient), then applying "fresh" weights and applying firm pressure to fully wet out the adhesive.  It's like a lot of other things in life, if it's done right it works fine, but if people half azz it then they get half azzed results.  When done properly, you will be hard pressed to get the weights off short of prying them off with  a tool.

My advice, tell your ace dealer to throw away that batch of weights he bought ten years ago and buy some fresh ones, then properly prep the wheel surface and try again.  Or go to a high volume auto tire shop and buy some weights from them - they usually go through them pretty quickly and don't let the inventory grow old.  Then make sure the "tech" washes his hands after eating his fried chicken for lunch, before he handles the wheel or the weights.  That's only partially in jest, btw.  I've seen more than one guy doing this stuff with greasy hands from pulling the axle, etc..  Probably a tipoff that the weights aren't going to stick very well when you can see the greasy smudges from his hands on the wheel on both sides of the weights.

I believe the weights flying off are factory installed

I agree with GRC, as usual. If installed correctly stick-on weights just will not fall off. I have been using them since the early '70's and have never lost one. Clean hands, very clean wheel and fresh weights should equal no problems. One thing, you CAN NOT quickly wipe the wheel with your finger just before installing to remove any unseen contamints. Your fingers even when just washed have natural grease.

I agree with GRC, and COR, when installed properly, wheel weights should stick. Here is the catch, on the SERG the wheel has a ridge; this ridge is right where the weight is attached, problem is when you look closely the adhesive does not touch the rim ( right in the middle of the wheel weight). If you think about it the only CVO with a big thread on dinged fenders is the SERG, the only CVO with that wheel. Hopefully my explanation is clear, wheel adhesive touches outer edge and inner edge, it does not touch in the middle.

The OCD bunch (like me)
Do not like the look of wheel weights and to have to clean around them.

Dyna beads work well as long as you do not put that. Fix a flat (sticky stuff) in the tire.

I have the problem with the weights coming off 'twice' on the rear wheel - both factory installed ones and one I installed as replacement. I did make sure that I cleaned the rim throughly with alcohol prior to installing the replacements, usually it's one or two weights that fall off (I have a total of 3oz on the rear rim - 3 each, .5oz weights on either side of the wheel. The problem in my situation is that at all times that they came off the foam adhesive tape remains on the rim, the weight release from the tape. Currently have them on order (placed order at end of June) on backorder till 7-21.
Instructions included with the replacements that i installed previously that service manager gave me at no cost (.5oz Chrome 'Bar & Shield') say in the instructions to install 3 drops of 'Loctite' #420( which is a cyanoacrylate adhesive) on the weight prior to placement on rim. Inquired with service manager at dealership about the 420, he did not know about that (He and the parts department do not have the 420 and have never purchased it), he commented that he has never used it and said they just clean and stick them, usually they install the .25oz chrome weights, very rarely do they install the 'Bar & Shield .5oz weights'.
Lost 2 rear weights(on the same side-one I installed and one factory) this past weekend, stopped at the dealership to pick up some items that I ordered and check on the status of the wheel weights, still on backorder till the 21st. spoke with service manager again explained the situation and he gave me a strip of the chrome .25oz weights to hold me over till .5oz weights come in.  will install the .25oz weights on temporally (normal clean and stick way of installation) but when the new .5oz weights come I will be removing the existing tape from the weights, installing new 3M tape with the Loctite #420, installed on both side of the tape(tape to rim/ tape to weight) replacing all wheel weights, hopfully that will eliminate the problem, never had this problem on previous bikes.

Larry, if the actual weight is peeling off the adhesive, that is just a sign of old or defective weights.  The Loctite adhesion booster product won't help that (and I've never seen anyone use it anyway).  Rather than hope the H-D warehouse isn't just shipping out more of the ten year old crap, why not head over to one of those high volume auto tire stores and see what they have for weights?  Lots of stick on weights are being used on auto's these days, and some of them are designed to look decent on fancy rims.  Those high volume tire stores keep the inventory pretty fresh in most cases.

Used Dynabeads for the first front and back on my SERK4 tire change, road from VA to NH and back tires/wheels were perfect.  The only thing is putting them in the tire, after spending a good amount of time pouring them down the front valve steam using the wife's vibrator  :-[ I decided for the rear I would put them in while the tire was off the bead.  I used a piece of copper tubing with rubber tubing around the outside, inserted it between the rim and tire at about 3:00 while tire is upright.  Took 30 seconds to dump them all in, just be sure the beads are landing around center of the tire width.  Then just carefully added air until the bead popped.
