Coughs and Dies?
« on: July 03, 2011, 12:43:34 PM »

Got a problem. Ever once in a while my bike will cough and sputter losing power. When I pull the clutch in it will die. Right after that it is hard to start sounding like the starter is in a bind. It will turn over many times and won't hit. Seems to help by turning off the key and re-setting everthing. It doesn't do this often so the dealer can never get a code on it? Someone told me it may be a crank adjustment sensor? Anyone got any ideas what may be causing this. The rest of the time it runs like a scalded dog. Thanks, Kenny

Crank position sensors have been known to do stuff like that, so it's a possibility.  Another is related to the previous question from hogasm.  If you have a tuning device like a Power Commander on the bike, they have also been known to cause intermittent issues like what you described.  Try disconnecting it if you have one and see if the problem goes away.

41,717 miles and been doing this off and on for about a year. When it acted up yesterday there was also a pop in the stereo speakers. I rolled into a gas station, turned the key off, put some fuel in and it started right up and I rode about 40 miles back home.

Has the fuel filter ever been renewed? There is also issues with the plastic fuel lines in the tank devloping pin holes in them.

I don't think so but this hic-up just happens ever once in a while with sometimes a thousand, more or less miles. If the fuel lines were gempt up it should act up all the time I would think. Has anyone ever had a crank sensor do anything like this?

At 40k you're due for a fuel filter.  If for no other reason than "just because."  30-ish thousand miles isn't an uncommon range to see them replaced.  It's a preventative maintenance item; or it should be.

The problem dragging on as long as it has may not sound like typical fuel filter behavior.  Doesn't rule it out completely though.  And while there pinholes in the fuel line can be checked for.  The previously mentioned crank position sensor is also a worthwhile consideration.  They will take a long time fail completely sometimes, act up intermittently in the process and not throw a code while it's all going on.
