Granite color spray paint
« on: July 06, 2011, 11:06:06 PM »

Has anyone found a spray touch up paint for the granite power train?  Want to paint my starter and can't find a spray paint to match was wondering if anyone has found something that works well.

Harley part # 98606CTN.

That's a spray can.  Twenty bucks a can.

Duplicolor grey.  Used it to paint the finned headbolt covers.  Perfect match.

Thanks for the info everyone,  Was at the dealer a month ago looking for spray touch up paint but they could only find the small brush on bottles.  Thanks again

I've held off while waiting for fired00d to chime in, but it appears he is asleep at the keyboard so I'll handle it for him.

JUST BUY THE CHROME STARTER AND YOU DON'T NEED ANY PAINT!

There, I've performed my CVO public service for the day.

Big C.

When my engine cases were peeling they tried the spray on crap to repair it.  Unfortunately, it didnt match my engine paint once dry and heated.  It stuck out like a sore thumb.

Would advise following Jerry's advice and get a chrome starter :)

LOL!!!!! :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Jerry I'll have to admit even I don't have the chrome starter. :shocked2: My hope was that something would happen to the OEM starter and I could pay the difference to upgrade to chrome while it was under warranty and ESP.... didn't work out that way tho. :bigcry:

I went back and forth with upgrading to the chrome starter because dealer is replacing due to bad finish.  Paint is just chipping of in small chunks!  But was hesitant to go with the chrome for cleaning reasons.  Just thought I wouldn't be able to clean all the nooks and crannies  out enough to keep it looking good.  For the guys that have gone chrome how is it to clean and wax?  Would you do the chrome starter again if had the chance?  My dealer would probably still let me upgrade after giving me a little razzing after all they already have the new black starter already in and waiting for a rainy day for install!

Don't have one, but it can't be as hard to clean as that wrinkle black finish on the standard starter.  At least the chrome version is smooth.  Just wipe it down with a little Windex and dry it off after you wash the bike, which is what I do on the chrome top cover on my trans and the chrome engine covers as well as the wheels and heat shields.

I have no idea why I opened my mouth and wound up promoting a chrome starter, since that is not something I would normally spend extra money for.  I think some of the chromaholics on this site have infected my brain.  At least in this case it wouldn't cost you much (probably $100 difference between it and the stock one, the dealer should only charge the difference in the part price).

Anyhow, if you wanted to paint the new starter grey, doing it right would entail tearing the starter down so you could properly prep and paint the outer housing and other painted pieces.  Just masking off a few spots and hitting the entire thing with a spray bomb could leave you with the same problem you have right now, peeling paint.  The secret is always in the prep.

Two years ago, mine had the paint coming off.  Dealer was going to replace it, got them to do the chrome for the cost difference.  I'm glad I did, it looks better and is no harder to keep clean.

Get a set of these and you won't have any problem reaching into nooks and crannies. Then, go chrome or go home!

Cory, you'll be glad you got the chrome starter.  Not only does it look good, but it is very easy to keep clean.  And so far mine isn't peeling chrome and was installed in the fall of '03. (damn, I've prolly jinxed it now).  D00d, admitting publically that the your starter isn't chrome is the 1st step to recovery.  ;D har.   spyder
