Harleys new LED Headlite options
« on: July 07, 2011, 08:23:07 PM »

 :confused5:
OK,  I have done some research on these new LED lites from HD.  They are made by (manufactored) by JW Speaker Co.   Some threads have shown comparisons between their LED lite and another offered by Truck-Lite.

I prefer the JW Speaker one and that is the one that is now packaged by H.D. and is offered in both the black (background reflector) version and the more common (chrome reflector) version.  As to $$$(cost),  my searchs so far show that some Harley dealers will have the best prices.......(hard to believe,  but true) :nixweiss:

The (black) versions are also available from other lighting companies that use (JW Speaker) products,  but price-wise, I have yet to see one that beats the HD prices. *************Pls note that the black version is the ONLY one with both (high and low beam) as you would expect.  They make a chrome one (for the truck/off-road shops), but it is (high beam) ONLY.

I have a '39 Chevy streetrod with a lowered front end and (non-adjustable) headlites and want to replace them with these LED types for maximum lighting down the road............plus one for  my '09 SE Ultra too.

So................Can anyone tell me the lowest price for these lites from (what) HD dealer around the country that I can  get since I'm wanting to buy 3 of them.

The chrome version is HD part number 73390-10A (my dealer wants $525 each).

By the way,  the black background version available from HD is p/n 6770040A  (same price).

I've seen some online ads for around $475 to $480...........depending on taxes and shipping,  not sure I can beat the local prices or not. :nixweiss:

H.D. has (both) and they both are high/low beams and as I  understand it,  the only source from JW Speaker to get a chrome background high/low LED (Model 8700).

Hmmmm, a very distinctive looking, $500.00 headlight that is held in place by 4 screws and can be removed in about a minute? Call me paranoid but I think I'll pass.

Plus we have the distinction of paying some of the highest taxes in the nation!! My oldest son lives in Roswell GA, and when the wife and I come to visit, we can't get over how nice a state Georgia is. I'll be retiring in a couple of years and I'm not sure of where I'll be living, but it won't be NY !!!

Can't blame you there,  I once lived in NY in the Kingston area for 2 yrs, 9 months and 8 days........finally moving out and down to Raleigh,  N.C.

It was like getting a pay raise cause of taxes and insurance and fu**ing tolls.  If ya don't have power windows,  after about six months or so, your left arm will return in size to equal your right arm.......as it no longer has to deal with cranking the window down/up to pay tolls crossing bridges and using the thruway...... :drink:

Couldn't prove that by actions of late. Unless your referring to to one union that actually benefited from the recent events.

 ???
You're right,  I had kinda forgotten about N. Jersey and their many, many toll booths.   Used to travel thru many of them on the way to/from the Newark airport.   At least, you now have a great governor that has the cajones to deal with unions.   His efforts should help to fix a good bit of the budget problems brought about by the unreasonable demands of public unions and their excessive pension and benefit demands.

The sagging economy has exposed these excesses and the (unfunded) liabilities they have generated.   Jersey is just one of many states dealing with the same kinds of problems that have been kicked down the road for many yrs.   Jerseys governor would be and should be putting himself up as a presidential candidate.   I'd sure consider him as a top notch candidate to get our country back on track. :drink:

Anymore feed back on these lights? I have heard of people saying there have beeen some fog issues on the H-D ones. I like them more than the HID but the price makes me wait for more input and or aftermarket people to get going on them. One thing I do know is that if they do fog up, the heat or lack of heat off the bulbs does not help to heat up the housing to burn out the moisture.

Topper,  I have not heard that complaint before.  I have reviewed a few (comparison tests) between this light and an alternative LED lite known as the (Truck-Lite),  and I never read any commentary regarding (fogging).   Pls relate the info if you have it.

Here is the best review of both LED types that I have seen so far............

I have the LED headlight and the LED spots. I upgraded from the HID lights. I love everything about the LED's, they are very bright, I can see both sides of the road, they light up signs far down the road. But if I would have been able to try before I bought them I would have bought the spots only and used my HID headlight with them. The reason I say that is the LED's throw a very flat wide light pattern. It is great running flat down a road. But when you lean to turn onto a dark road there is no glare to see the road you are turning on. The beam of light is very flat, so when you lean to turn and your headlight is pointing downward, the beam of light you see is only a couple of feet tall. If you roll your bike close to a wall and look at the LED light pattern you can see what i am trying to explain. The spots are well worth the money, I have seen deer and small animals standing 50' off the side of the road. The LED light pattern has a flat cut off so not to blind on coming traffic which is good until you need to make a left turn onto a dark road. Tight twisties on dark roads you have to slow way down because the lights don't light up the next corner. Hope this helps. I would recommend you try the spots first, that maybe all you need.

If you like the Mountains check out the North Ga. Mtns., From Blue Ridge, Ga. east to Helen and south, and not far from Rosewell. Alot of good roads to ride your scoot, Lakes, Streams if you like to fish. We live in East Tennessee (Knoxville) foothills of the Smokies, just spent the 4th of July week end in Blairsville, Ga. and really enjoyed it, Thinking about going back this fall instead of going to Daytona or Panama City, Fl. to one of the Rally's, Believe me thats saying alot coming from me, Going to the Mtns. instead of a rally at the Beach.
