Any input on toy hauler/camper trailers?
« on: July 11, 2011, 10:23:03 AM »

I figure some of you might be into this sort of thing.

Nothing carved in stone yet, just thinking it over.
We already have a truck to pull it. We have the bike, 4 wheeler, dirt bikes, bicycles...

This is what we're looking at:
30' toy hauler. It has outdoor shower, outdoor grill and cooktop, 50 Gallon gas tank and gas pump, full bathroom/shower, TV, and can be 2 bedroom when the "toys" are unloaded.

We figure it will provide lots of options to take the grandkids to different places and make memories. When they are with us the bike will stay home. Lots of RV parks have pools and waterslides. Some have ATV parks where we can ride dirt bikes and 4 wheelers too. Lots of options.

When it's just us, we will have the bike and the truck to go and do whatever we want.

If we did 2 bikes and 2 couples, each couple can have a separate bedroom. If the kids are with us they can have a closed off separate area to themselves where we won't really hear them... so we can get some sleep.

Anyone into this sort of thing and have any input for us?

I've been looking at this for a couple of years...not for right now, but perhaps in the future.  The one you're looking at is very nice.  The only suggestion I have is to take a look at the 5th wheel versions of these things.  From everything I've read, the 5th wheel pulls a bit better and provides a few more options for floor plans.  Since they are taller, they feel a bit more spacious on when inside and the "upstairs" part is generally more isolated from the rest of the unit.  There are a million options for these things, so it quickly becomes confusing and a bit overwhelming.

The 5th wheels typically have a bit more storage capacity underneath as well.  Just something to take a look at while you're mulling it over.

Still doing research. Want something I can tow with the truck I own now. My Ford is 9500 Lbs towing capacity. This thing, fully loaded, is around 7600.

Take a look at Jayco. In many circles, they are considered the Cadillac of the RV industry, and gosh, they really stand behind their products. Years ago, my friend and I both bought top of the line popups. I got the Jayco and he got the Coleman. We both eventually had issues with the fancy one piece roofs, and Coleman really screwed him over. Jayco on the other hand gave me a new roof 7 years later, rebuild the lifter system - just in case - and gave me all new canvas for my troubles, all for nothing. That alone was worth more than the entire trailer was at that point.  If I ever consider getting a Toyhauler, or another RV, they earned a lifetime customer. It's too bad more companies don't look at business this way, especially the MOCO.

If you can find one with "basement" heat and air, those units really do a better job with heating and cooling. I'm not sure they are available in the "toy hauler" line but they are in others.

I have considered a Toy Hauler for our future also. Amigo's looks great. My concerns are, gas prices, parking it when not in use, using it enough to justify. Plus at this time I don't have a truck large enough to pull it. But I still like the idea behind them, the one you are looking at looks good. Not to big, not to small.

Heartland makes a great toy hauler, The  Road Warrior and Cyclone lines. I have a Cyclone 5th. Really nice trailer.

We have one and love it. I have a Wolfpack Super Lite, made by Forrest River. It is a bumper pull, 27 ft long box, 31 feet total length. It will haul 2 full dressers. We love it. It pulls great. Ours will sleep 6. They have several different floor plans. We went to Austin Tx to the ROT rally and had a blast in it. We use it as just a camper a lot going to the lake. The price is not too bad and it is well made. Not junk. It has a fuel tank, outside shower, full bath inside with shower and tub. I would have loved to had the 5th wheel version of it, but it was way outside my price range. It has several tie downs in the floor. Ducted a/c and heat. Kind of sounds like I am a salesman for them but I ain't. We really like it.
We have had 6 people in it. It did start to get small with that many inside. But most of the time, it is me, the wife, and sometimes my son. He is 24 and will go sometimes. We will take our 4 wheeler camping and it is real handy.
Hope this helps. The model we have is a 27DFWP.

This 30' trailer is lighter than most of the 20'-22' toy haulers. It has that pull-out that the smaller ones don't have, and I like that the bathroom sparates the cargo/2nd bedroom from the front. The outdoor shower and BBQ grill is cool, the gas pump and tank is cool, and it costs less than the 22' trailers I have been looking at.

Half Crazy. I have had a few Toy Haulers both tag along and 5th wheels. I currently own a Fuzion 5th wheel Coach, and love it. They do make a 5th wheel toy hauler that can be pulled by a 1/2 ton truck. PM me some info and I will call you. You are about 4 hours from the best dealer in the US!!!!! If they can't hook you up no one can.
