Is the SERT PRO that bad
« on: July 12, 2011, 11:36:56 PM »

Having a 2011 CVO softail covertable with the HDland ECM system. The only game in town is the SERT for now is it that bad to wait and tune my bike. HDdude at Metal Dragon said they have used SERT it's just not as user friendly and they have to charge more because of the extra time messing with the program. Looking for any input because without a tuner I am dead in the water about doing anything to my bike.

To answer your question, no-- it's not that bad.  It is not any less user friendly than other tuners IMO.  It does lack a couple of features of TTS but that's not a deal breaker.  It is a fine tuner in the right hands.  I, for one, do not charge any more to tune the SEST than the TTS.

I'd have to agree.

The quality of a tune has much more to do with the skills of the tuner than the tuning device.  Some tuning devices are more cumbersome to use - thus a more expensive tune (sometimes) - but the resulting performance of the tune varies very little between devices...   :2vrolijk_21:

I agree. I don't charge any more either. Tunes the same way. Only thing that would better is if we had spark temp and. PE adjustment.
actuall a SESPT flashs the map fast and no lock ups since the 2011 cd came out.
Nice thing about the SESPT is it saves your cal in the vci ....very handy.
even if there was another choice besides the SESPT for 2011 softail i would still sell a guy a SESPT just for the fact that the moco dosent give much greif about a tuner being used, if it is there tuning device. I have tuned the same 120r with both a sespt and the" other" tuner no diff in driveability or wot . You just have to know what timing is being taken out at what tem.and what the PE is doing.

Thank you all for your input. It looks like I will go with a SERT and have Metal Dragon do the fueling 574 cams. I current have V&H slip ons no tuning required for just the slip ons. But now I can do the cams and maybe bump the compression with the .030 head gaskets.

You will be happy!  I suspect Jim will have Bob at RCCycles do the tune, and he is one of the very best...   :2vrolijk_21:

Didn't TTS make the old SERT? What's the big difference?

No not at all.
There's good tuners on both coasts - and when your bike is with Jim (hd-dude) on the west coast, you use the best tuner on the west coast.
There are very few that can match the quality Tman offers.
It would be to your benefit to consider using some of Tman's services. It certainly couldn't hurt.
I do every chance I get.

There's nothing wrong with the SESPT.  Like 2Lane says, it boils down to the person that's doing the tune.  Some shops are more comfortable with one tuner over another and will naturally lean towards recommending/selling the one they are the most comfortable with.  I've talked to tuners that have used both the TTS and the SESPT and they've said there's good points and weak points about both of them, but niether of them are bad tuners.
