Helmet Vents
« on: July 15, 2011, 11:02:40 AM »

I hear what you guys are saying. I have another HJC 3/4 Helmet with a flip up shield and a vent. I opened the vent and it looks like they just drilled a 1/4 hole thru the helmet and glued a vent that could be opened and closed over the top of the hole. I am going to go with what you guys are saying and take my 3/4 Helmet on vacation since it will offer more protection against wind and hail. However, I am inclined to think that HJC just drills a hole in the helmet and glues the venting over the top. Seems like it would make a more sturdy product than making the helmet with the hole already in it. Thanks for the advice. CAHDBIKER

Does anyone know where to buy a kit to install a helmet vent. I have an HD Destination style helmet. I had a similar HJC helmet with vents that could be opened and closed. I called HJC and they would not sell any venting kits.Thanks. CAHDBIKER

Buy a new helmet with vents already in it. Cutting the shell to install aftermarket vents will compromise the integrity of the helmet.

Gonna go with the group here as well and I'm sure that's why they wouldn't sell you any vents. It would make them liable in court.

Oh and nice photo of your bike and the coast. Was stationed at Mugu from 1997-2000. Good duty but it sure went fast. Took my auto body and fender classes at Oxnard CC and what a good rate for classes. h/j.

I'm no structrual engineer, but I kinda doubt that drilling a couple of small holes like most 'vented' helmets have in them would compromise the integrity of a helmet shell.  Just carry some correct sized rubber plugs in case you wanted to seal off the vents if it turned really cold or something.  I also don't understand why a helmet shell is no longer viable after a couple of years of use.  But, they gotta increase helmet sales somehow, I understand that.  ;) spyder

Shave your head.  As a baldy I can feel the vents blowing on my scalp pretty good.   :huepfenlol2:

Not an expert either, with plastic shells I'd understand as all plastic items exposed to sun over time become fragile.
Not sure if this is also the case with Carbon Fibre,  Glass Fibre or other Helmet materials, but I guess so.
What's the manufacturers recommendations these days? 3 years?
Wonder if there has ever been an independent study on "old" helmets.

If it's the UV and not the 'heat' that degrades them, then a good paint covering should protect them from becoming fragile...wouldn't it?  Another reason to get that custom paint applied.  ;) har.  spyder

I think if you were to consult with a helmet expert you would find that the useful life recommendations aren't based on the outer shell material, but rather on the expanded rigid foam material on the inside that provides the actual shock absorption.  It's a more complex material than the simple "Styrofoam" in a cheap ice chest, but it still degrades over time just like that Styrofoam ice chest.  And that rigid foam is the reason the helmet manufacturer's do not endorse painting a finished helmet.  Solvents degrade the foam rapidly.  Dump a little lacquer thinner or gasoline on your ice chest and see what happens.

The outer shells can also degrade over time, but that is more likely to affect penetration standards rather than the impact standards.
