05 FLHTCSE2 or 10 Ultra Limited ?
« on: July 15, 2011, 12:42:52 PM »

Thinking about pulling the trigger on one but just don't know which one. Both have low miles and closely priced. The wife and I rented an ultra for the day and liked the ride, but have never rode a SEEG. Just needing some advise on the pros and cons of either bike thanks.

Geez...that's a tough one.  They really are two almost completely different bikes in many ways.  For pure comfort on the road, you really can't beat the Ultra because of the TP, the updated HK stereo, more speakers, ABS brakes, new style frame ("better" handling), bigger tires.  Nicer stock seat for sure.  Some liked the '05 seat, but most end up changing it for something a bit more comfy.

The 103" engine on the '05 is not the same as the 103" on the new bike.  The older 103" is proven and is a really good motor.  The new 103" motor is also good, but different design.

The '05 SEEG has nicer paint, a bunch more chrome, and is a classic CVO bike.  You can add the chrome to the new bike, but you'll never recoup your money on resale.  If that's not important, then don't worry about it and make it your own.  Even the SEEG doesn't have EVERYTHING, but more than the Limited with regards to chrome stuff.

The older bike has lowered (1") suspension front and rear...not always a good thing.  The new bike has full travel suspension (13" shocks as opposed to 12").  To be blunt, all HD stock suspension sucks, but you don't know that if you have no basis for comparison.  It's adequate.

My opinion:  If you are going to use the bike primarily for touring, two up...I'd opt for the Ultra because of the creature comforts and newer frame.  But, I'd have to do some things to it for my tastes.  If both are stock with regards to exhaust systems, that'll be one thing you'll want to change almost immediately, both for a nicer sound and better performance.  So, overall looks...the SEEG. Functional features...the Ultra.

I think the new frame is the reason to go in favor of the Ultra.

New Frame, 6 speed, 6 gallon tank, 103, better electronics/efi system, TBW (OK you can argue either way on that LOL)

Got to go to the 10, JMO

I suspect most that pick the 10 Ultra have never owned a SEEG.
Owning a SEEG is an experience that so far has never been duplicated.
A bunch have traded their SEEG for new bikes but a lot regret they did.
Owning a SEEG is like owning the Classic 00 and 01 SERG, if you have to ask why you would own it, you wouldn't understand anyway.

One other point that perhaps I did not emphasize enough...The newer model bikes have significantly better brakes, IMO, than the older bikes.  Brembo calipers and ABS.  ABS brakes on a bike are huge in my opinion, and likely to save your a$$ at some point in time.

I owned an 05 candy SEEG for 6 years and two months ago traded for a 2011.5 SEEG Big Blue. I am a long time rider as evidenced by my grey hair and the 05 was my all time favorite. I agree with most of the points already made. As mentioned, the 05 comes std from the factory in a lowered condition. For me it made for a very agile bike and I had no complaints about the factory suspension. To be honest, I am still not comfortable on the new one because it is so much more top heavy than the 05. My wife would never go backwards to the of. BSR comforts are far superior.

Guess the question you have to ask yourself is are you willing to buy the 5 yr older bike just because of more chrome. You can always add a little bling to the 2010 to suit your taste,

Having owned both, I would go with the newer ride. Hope this helps.

My choice between those two bikes would be the 10 Ultra, for the same reasons others have said. The ABS brakes are fantastic and have already worked for me at least twice. One other thought, there a lot of CVO bikes for sell. A good source to check is the website Chopperexchange.com. You might find a nice low miles SE Ultra Classic, or other touring bike that you like. Unless you are dead set on one of the two bikes you have already found. More choices are always good. Good luck. :bananarock:

Again, my opinion...If you look around for a used CVO Ultra Classic, I'd look for an '09 or '10 because of the new frame being introduced in '09.  One stand alone model was the '06, which I owned at one time.  It had the same engine as the '05 you're looking at, with the new radio, a leather TP, etc.  If you like the paint scheme on that model year, it can be a nice bike with a few tweaks here and there.  Still, if you could come up with the money, an '09 or '10 would be a good choice.

WoW! that is a hard question I think Terry and Chip are right on, having owned all three colors of the 05 SEEGs and 09 SERG and now 2011 Ultra, To be honest I bought the 2011 just because Soozie is riding with me alittle more now because of picture taking. the 11 is taller and alittle harder for me with two up but a much smoother ride better seat, better sound system, and ABS brakes, These are all standard on the 11's that I had to add to the 05. Motor wise you can not beat the 103's in the SEEG's, the new 103's well the jury is still out on them. I'd have to say if your riding 2up most of the time the 10 or 11 would be the way to go!  :nixweiss:    either way you go I think you'll be happy!

Can't argue that point.  In a perfect world, I'd have a 2005 Red SEEG with some of the stuff I did on my '06 SEUC for day/shorter trips, and my 2011 SERGU for longer, 2 up trips.  In an ideal world, I'd have my old Red '06 SEVROD too...just to compliment the other two.  8)
