Oil
« on: July 20, 2011, 07:55:30 PM »

Here is an e-mail I received from a friend. What are your comments?

I was talking to a couple of guys who own a aftermarket HD repair shop and drag races them. We got on the discussion of oil.  They had some very interesting comments about Amsoil and early hour engine failures. Any of the bright metals seem to be failing around 35,000 miles. Items that have brass or copper in them are what is failing. Items such as lifters, oil pump bushings, rocker arm bushings and piston pin bushings. Your buddy came to mind, who had to replace his lifters at 35,000 miles. Seems that Amsoil must have low amounts of phosphorus which acts as an extreme pressure additive that keeps the parts separated. Might want inform him to not run that oil or he will be doing repairs on his motor again very shortly!

They also confirmed what I thought about the screaming eagle oil and it not being able to handle the stresses of transmission use. They also have seen failures similar to mine when screaming eagle oil is used. They are huge fans of Belray for transmission use, no oil related failures even in their drag bikes.

Amsoil is very highly rated in terms of anti-wear properties.  And the comment "seems that Amsoil must have low amounts of phosphorus....." is based on what exactly.  If that is their theory, all they have to do is pull up the data sheets to prove or disprove it.

Muddy, your lifter failure wasn't caused by Amsoil.  Don't let uninformed third parties try to screw with your mind.  All those failures they mentioned have nothing to do with the brand of oil, they have to do with the cheap crap parts and design from H-D.  Those same parts fail regardless of oil brand.

Could not agree more.
I would put money that if you checked all the lifter problems people are having, you would find they all are using different oil.
I get so tired of people blaming junk parts or bad design on the oil they use.
I do not use Amsoil now, but have in the past with much success.
I see the same problems the past few years with GM 5.3 flex fuel  vehicles destroying cam lobs and lifters.
GM is telling us techs it is the newer oils doing it.
BULLCRAP. Some are using dino, some synthetic, and all different brands.
The kicker is that no matter what they (GM) say, they are paying for the new motors, so what does that tell you.
IT AIN"T THE OIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just sayin
