Help: Seat Options for an 03 SERK?
« on: July 21, 2011, 12:24:17 PM »

Well, I down to the seat options on the 03 SERK . . . in the 2K I have ridden the scoot, the stock seat just has never felt comfortable . . . I am practically sitting on the tank.

I am now pretty well decided . . . first I was just going to go to a simple solo seat--like a police bike seat--, but, for those long rides I will need that removable backrest.

(I do have a matching detachable chopped tour pack I occasionally use--but very rarely--just longer trips.)

So what I am looking for is a solo seat with a backrest (hopefully that uses the stock backrest hardware if possible) for the 03 SERK . . .

I am taking suggestions on what to consider . . .

(This is not a WTB post, but an "If it were my scoot I would . . ." post.)

TIA

Take a look at this from Corbin:  http://www.corbin.com/harley/king/rksol97.shtml

Or this:  http://www.corbin.com/harley/king/rk97hws.shtml

I don't know where you are, but if you're within riding distance of Hollister, CA, go there and have them do the seat while you wait.  Or give Jim (HDdude) a call at Metal Dragon and let him order the seat for you with a discount.

Mustang seats are also liked by some.  http://www.mustangseats.com/Categories.aspx?intCategoryID=8&Category-Name=Seats&reset=true'

My personal choice would be a Corbin.  I've had one before on my '06 SEUC.  They are quite firm, but for long days in the saddle, firm is good, IMO.  As I mentioned, since you live in GA, I'd give Jim a call...he knows the details on the CVO bikes to order you a seat that will fit like a glove.  You mentioned that you feel like you're sitting on the tank...are you a tall person?  If so, you can get the seat built to move you back a bit.  The stock backrest will not work in any case...you'll have to get the Corbin backrest as well, but it's better than stock, IMO.

IMO the problem will be a seat that uses the stock backrest hardware. With most non H-D seats you can still get a backrest (such as the Corbin recommendations) but they have their own backrest and fitments.

I am not a big fan of the backrests (and with the stock I found it certainly did push me forward). I have used Corbin and they are great seats. I now have a Le Pera which is equally comfortable and a C&C seat which I use when riding solo, but neither have  backrests - although the Le Pera still gives a lot of lower back/spine support.

Thanks to all for the response . . . I think I am going to look around for a Le Pera.

The stock seat looks great.  Rides awful.  But it looks great!

I had great results with the HD Tallboy.  I'm about 6'2" and 225#.

I thought about one-up options a lot.  I wanted to have the option to move a KTP forward or back, and also change out into full bar-hopper mode just by pulling off extras.

Junked all those ideas & went to a new SERGU.  Not convertible & I lose the option to go without a windshield, but in the end I decided I wasn't up for all the mod's.

If you're tall/large, the Tallboy seat sets you back nicely.  Lots of room to make adjustments on long hauls.

Caution on the Tallboy though - it did not play well with the finish on the tank.  Can't believe they put em out without something softer underneath to avoid that.

I bought a H-D Sunray heated seat off ebay (Harley dealer/closeout deal...I think it was via Jennie) some years back for about 1/2 list price.  Seat feels good & keeps ya' toasty warm during the cold times....and uses the stock back rest.   If you do two-up riding...you will hear no noise coming from the passenger area.  :)  My only (minor) complaint is that the lower side of the seat comes very close to the inner corner of the saddlebag lid....it hasn't rubbed/touched yet but it is close.   Just a good seat for long hauls.

When I got my 03 SERK, the previous owner had swapped out the original seat for the HD "Comfort Stitch" model.  It sits a bit lower, like a bucket seat, and the way it's shaped it has a backrest effect.

I really like this seat, and think it's the most comfortable one I've ever sat on.  See if you can find one mounted on a bike and try it out.
