New LED (HD) Headlite versus the garage door opener
« on: July 21, 2011, 08:13:11 PM »

 :nixweiss:
I've got an '09 SE Ultra Classic,  and just bought that insanily expensive LED headlite and want to install it tomorrow.

Some other posts have suggested that you need this (extra) harness splitter (can't recall the p/n right now)..........in order to (maintain) the garage door opener function??????????

The instruction sheet that came with this damn $500 plus lite, did (not) mention any need for a splitter to avoid loss of the garage door function.

So,  not wanting to install the damn thing and button everything up..........only to find out that I have lost my garage door function,  can anyone verify it the splitter is needed or NO it is not. :-\

Good post moscooter.
I didn't realize there was an issue between the led headlight and the openor.
Was going to purchase the led headlight but will wait till there is some followup on this thread.

You sure that wasn't the HID that required the splitter, not the LED?  The LED is supposedly a straight plug in replacement that shouldn't require any wiring changes if I remember correctly.

Can't verify a splitter is needed but my dealer installed mine and the garage door opener works fine.

I posted pics of my install in the following thread.  Splitter keeps you from cutting any wires and splicing connections.  I don't like cutting my harness.  Your choice.

Like CVORick I used the splitter so I didn't have to cut and splice.

Travis and I put the LED headlight in his 2011 bike.  The GDO connects the headlight harness prior to the H4 headlight socket.  So GDO connection was untouched by adding the headlight.

The GDO harness on the 2010 is after the H4 socket and part of the harness for the separate high/low beam headlight. I guess they changed that on the 2011?  :nixweiss:

Must have.  To confirm go to the Ronnie's HD website and check out the parts manual breakdowns.

Well that's good info for the people with the newer bikes making the change. Save them from buying the $40 HD splitter.

OK,   I'm needing a little more clearification.   My Ultra is an '09 model.

I've pulled out the stock HID type headlite and  unplugged the dual harness behind it.  That leaves a connector that will match up to the new LED lite harness.  I would assume I can just plug it in there and put it all back together and it will work and I can adjust the aim and all is well.............................. :confused5:or have I now lost my garage door opener function.

I don't see any need to "splice" anything unless you're saying that I gotta do that to maintain the GDO or else use this "splitter" for that reason. :-\

So long as the "dual harness" you describe is just a Y splitter that goes from the original H4 type headlight plug to the two H8/H11 style sockets you are correct.  It'll be plug and play.  If that Y harness also split off to the garage door opener you'd have had something else to cut or disconnect from it.

with my 2010 it had the dual bulb head light, one plug for each light. the LED only had one plug, so the wireing harness could be disconnected up stream of the dual plugs but the door opener would not have worked due to it being down stream of the harness plug. the " Y "splitter was male X female that allowed you to reconnect the factory harness plugs and have the single bulb plug for the LED, thus allowing the door opener to work. I just taped up the dual bulb plugs back to the factory harness. check out this thread, on page three there are pics of the factory harness plugs and pics of the "Y" adapter installed
