Florida is doing it right.
« on: July 22, 2011, 08:38:37 AM »

WAY TO GO FLORIDA...... 49 STATES TO GO!!! Florida is the first State that will require drug testing when applying for welfare (effective July 1st)! Some people are crying this is unconstitutional. How is this unconstitutional? It's OK to drug test the people who WORK FOR THEIR money but not those who don't? It's about time :2vrolijk_21:

Good for Florida, I just wonder where 95% of the welfare will move to...  I wish all states would enforce this as Florida does.  :2vrolijk_21:

I think that's about what I bring home a week after working 50 hours and paying taxes, insurance, etc! :(

I don't get how it's unconsitutional.....what's they're thinking on that?  Nobody's forcing them to sign up for welfare, it's their choice. :nixweiss:  And while we're on this topic......why is not every able bodied person out there on welfare not doing some kind of work for it.  Even 20 hours a week still allows them time to look for a job (if they really were)....clean up the parks, roads, etc.

Oh man, don't get me started...........

I am in the drug and alcohol misuse prevention business in Oklahoma and they should be able to get a 10 panel drug screen including collections and lab fees (urine) for no more than $20.00 per screen.

My plan that I submitted to my state rep was to train all on public assistance (welfare) in childcare and public property maintenance let them work one week at the child care center then a week in the maintenace area continuing to alternate so all will be treated equally this would include drug and alcohol misue screening was advised it would not work to simple a plan for the government to administer heck I would run the program for 10% of what they are paying out in public assistance checks each month and could prob live very well.

Imho, these is a big difference between welfare and disability. If you are able to work, you do something - anything of value to society. If you failed our free public education system, I'm sure you can weed flower beds, or cut grass. If you've got a marketable skill of any sort, send them to businesses and if they work out, charge them 1/2 and coop the costs. If you are able to work, you should have to do something to earn your check.

The point is, paying someone to sit on a couch and not be a responsible and productive person everyday, is what allows inappropriate behavior to flourish.

Time to break the chain.

This law will accomplish absolutely nothing, overall.  Clean your act up for a couple of days prior to being tested, for anything other than pot, and you'll test clean.  Some of the most harmful drugs are out of your system in a couple of days.  Alcohol being one of the main "drugs of choice", one of the most harmful to both the individual, the family, and society in general...and one of the fastest to get out of your system. Unless they want to test hair, and that ain't $20 per.

Looks good on paper, and politically it pacifies some, but in reality nothing will be accomplished with an initial screening.  Random testing would be another matter entirely.

So here's what will happen:  The law will be challenged, Florida will spend gobs of taxpayer dollars fighting it, possibly all the way to the Supreme Court, and it will be struck down, and even if it's not (highly unlikely), many, many $$$$ will be spent in the process.

Time, money, and effort could be better spent trying to solve the root of the problem.  End of discussion on my part...

Welfare is just another one of those social problems that has no real solution. It creates a problem whether you change it or leave it as is.

The welfare program is meant to help the most innocent in all of this and that's the children who need clothing, food and shelter.

The drug addicted parents most likely aren't using welfare for the kids to begin with . (But maybe)

Taking the welfare away guarantees it isn't being used for the kids.

I think it's one of those areas that you can't be 100% perfect on.

So how do we ensure the welfare of the kids?

Does this drug testing program resolve this problem any more than leaving it alone did? Or does the mean and scared tactic, which is very popular today, just get the politicians more votes? It seems like our society keeps see-sawing on the give it all away, take it all away.

Do we feel better because drug testing will mean that the welfare of needy children is being met or because a bunch of drug addicts aren't getting a free handout?

Throwing money blindly to welfare seems to have created it's own problems without ensuring the welfare of needy children.

You are correct sir testing using hair as the medium is not $20 per it is $37.50 here. Do not want to punish children at all we already have laws in place to protect them hell take 20 and send them to me will feed them, clothe them, give them a place to sleep, chores to do and see that they get to school.
