Some people are nuckin' futs, that's why.

It is ironic that something like this happened in one of the most peace loving places on earth.  Very, very sad.

The sad part about these kind of acts is that there is really not a hell of a lot you can do to stop it.  A lone assailant, with tremendous firepower, can do an awful amount of damage before he/she is stopped.  Just look at the Gabriel Giffords situation for another example of some extremeist, acting alone, filled with hate for this or that reason.  And I'm pretty sure I know you can carry firearms in Arizona with relative impunity, and can carry concealed with a permit.  That fact did not deter that individual. When you get some nutcase like this taking action, it all happens so fast, a lot of the damage is done before people know what's happening, or can react.

Unfortunately, I don't see this kind of random act stopping any time soon.
Couldn't have been too quick since account of people hearing others begging for their life have been recounted.  I'll give you the 'surprise' element, but, personally I'd want to have a chance to defend myself & others being systematically slaughtered by being armed in a situation such as this. I think that Europe will re-think it's policies of Police & citizen armed defense after this terrible event. Lots of people try to 2nd guess what could have been done and why couldn't this have been prevented...but, there are lots of unstable people that are influnced by the media and other sources to the point of acting out in horrific ways such as this. The people spewing the hatred are as responsible as anyone.  spyder

Don't misunderstand, Spyd...I agree...I'd rather have the opportunity to be able to defend myself as well.  But European countries have a completely different mindset about firearms, as do their citizens.  I don't see that changing.  On the other hand, I think it's crazy for the police to be expected to do their job and not have the capability to use deadly force, so that will likely be re-examined.

A trained professional, or someone with actual experience in using deadly force, is someone I would want near me in the event of something like this.  The average Joe walking around with a firearm does not really know how he/she will react in a situation where deadly force may be necessary...I think I know how I'd react, but hopefully I'll never be put in that situation to be tested.

It's just really hard to defend against this kind of attack.  It's so unpredictable.  It will take that country a while to recover from this senseless act.

The maximum prison term suspected killer Anders Behring Breivik could face is 21 years under Norwegian law.

The alleged mass murderer who killed nearly 100 people in Norway on Friday may be facing just 21 years in prison if convicted. Norway does not have the death penalty.

Oslo police chief of staff Roger Andresen told the San Francisco Chronicle that the maximum prison term suspected killer Anders Behring Breivik could face is 21 years under Norwegian law.

Two law professors at the University of Oslo confirmed Andresen’s assessment.

“21 years in prison is the maximum,” Professor Per Ole Johansen told The Daily Caller.

“The max punishment may — theoretically — be increased, but not for crimes which are already committed,” he said, when asked whether it was possible for the punishment to be increased considering the scale of this specific mass crime.

“If the prisoner behaves, he or she will probably be released several years earlier,” Professor Nils Christie told TheDC while also confirming that 21 years is the maximum penalty in Norway.

Christie, however, said it is theoretically possible for the perpetrator to be held in prison longer than 21 years, though it almost never happens.

Divide 21 years by the number of people killed.

In case you're wondering, 93 dead (so far), divided by 21 years comes to about 2 3/4 months penalty per murder.  That's about 82 days each -- assuming he doesn't get out earlier.

If I could make one wish, it would be to be his jailer, in charge of him without having to answer to anyone else.

I would NOT advocate the death penalty in his case, and I feel the maximum 21 years would be more than adequate.

The rest?  Oh, I would make him wish he were dead every breathing second of his miserable life.

Trouble is, I don't think I am as sadistic as it would be necessary to punish him in a way that would satisfy my desires to make that scum of a waste of flesh suffer.  I guess I would have to hire some of the punishment out, I'm sure I'd have no problem getting volunteers for that task.

One thing for sure, I would NOT ever let him speak or have any representative (lawyer) spread any of his thoughts, words or messages in any way, shape or form.  As far as I am concerned, he has NO legal rights to anything. I believe in justice and the legal process ... to a point !!!!!

One other thing that made it hard for people to defend against this guy was that he was disguised as a police officer. Apparently he encouraged young people to come to him for police protection then he gunned them down.

Even if somebody was armed, imagine the confusion with coming up against a uniformed person. Somebody might shoot you for shooting the cop if the fake cop didn't call you over for help and shoot you first.

They believe the fertilizer/fuel car bomb (Oklahoma City copy) was triggered by a cell phone he called from the island. Many parts of his manifesto was copied from Ted Kaczynski. We don't have to wonder the source where he got all of his ideas and information for planning this attack.

I am halfway through this guy's manifesto, he is very well educated and thought of everthing from soup to nuts when it comes to plotting an attack, he even has details on how to produce your own level IV and V body armour including the method to dye the fabric to match the uniform of the organisation you need to infiltrate.

In the past I have read both the Anarchist Cookbook and the Al-Qaeda training manual and those two do not even compare the the quality of these 1500+ pages so far.

The worst part about the manifesto is that he published it a couple of hours before the attacks, even though the authorities are making efforts to remove it, it is now out there for public consumption forever.

This man was no halfwit, unfortunately he has provided his recipe for disaster to the world and it's horrible to say but I suggest that it will be used again soon by some like minded person who is intent on making a name for themselves with similar results.
