One Hot Bike!
« on: May 27, 2006, 04:00:27 PM »

It is finally turning to summer here and today it's in the low 90's.  The wife and I did a short little trip today and damn, this is one hot bike.  I'm talking about temperature hot.  My butt and thighs were darn near well done.  My bike is totally stock at this point.  And the cross over on the right side isn't the problem, hell the left side was hotter.  And yes, I had the vents open on the lowers.  I'm not sure how far I could really ride on a hot day.  Think I'd have roasted nuts after 100 miles.  [smiley=banana.gif]

I know my '04 Road King Classic was no where near this hot.  I had a Valkyrie that I thought was hot, but nothing like this beast.  I can't imagine sitting in traffic in Sturgis some afternoon and the outside temp is about 105.

Anyone else having this problem?  Any solutions?

I've seen bikes with plastic heat deflectors mounted under the seat. They are not too noticeable. I can see where they would shield your thighs some. The 103's run a little warmer and mine was noticeable too. Putting Rineharts on seems to have helped a little. I'm sure there are guys on here who can give you some more ideas or where to find the deflectors that I'm talking about.

Yes, this is a hot bike! When I removed the lower fairings for better foot controls(size 15 boot), I found it made a very noticeable difference in the heat problem. Also, I found it smoothed the ride a bit.

For what it is worth, I think the Haze has a cleaner look without the lowers. Not so with the Crimson or the Melon.

I would also recommend putting these on your scooter:

Chrome Footpeg Extensions - 50924-03A
Stealth Footpegs - 50359-04

As this will get your legs out away from the motor area, plus a breeze can cool your legs

I am attaching a picture of how I have my riding pegs as I can adjust my boot/shoe to be on the riding peg or toe on peg and heel on floor board or boot/shoe on floor board - 3 different positions and I use them all on longer rides. I personally prefer the heal on floor board and toes on riding pegs.

I have noticed the engine heat now too in the warmer weather. ;D
I haven't removed the lowers yet, I was trying to keep them on but open the vents.I don't notice the heat much when moving but stopped in traffic is another story.
I know the police in the area have tried the HD electric fans and they said it did lower the engine temp some but they hated the heat that was directed on the rider while stopped.Overall they were not impressed and wanted the fans removed. Harley's ad for the fans talk about an improved more dourable setup, I wonder if there was some early problems with them breaking?
I guess I may have to remove the lowers when it gets hotter here. ;D

I have never removed my lowers, however you will feel "the heat" when riding around city (stop and go traffic) and when you stop you will feel the heat on your legs. I try to avoid to much city stop and go traffic because of this. I like the look of my bike w/lowers, and if you ever get caught in the rain you don't have to worry about putting on rubber boots as you can keep your feet tucked in, and they don't get wet.

I have seen the shields that were mentioned above to protect the riders from heat, but was concerned about keeping the heat around the motor. [smiley=nixweiss.gif] Thought it would be better for me to be a little uncomfortable for short periods of time (when stopped) then keeping hot air trapped around motor at all times. My concern was these shields may disrupt the air flow around the rear jug which is the one that gets the hottest.

I feel your pain :-/...

My wife complains of the heat on her legs as well...I am planning to switch to V&H true duals since I think the crossover is a lot of the problem on my bike. I will let you know if it helps!

The only time the heat from the engine bothers me is when ambient temperature is above 70 degrees and I'm in city traffic and at stop lights. This will be the 1st summer with the bike so I don't know if I'll be able to tolerate the heat with the lowers on. I really like the look of the bike with the lowers but if removing them provides relief around town then they'll come off.  :(

I guess this is the price we pay for big inch air cooled motors.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Try exhaust heat wrap between the pipe and the heat shield.  Used it on some Thunderheaders and made a big difference, especially for the passenger.

I would never leave the lowers on any H-D Bagger in weather that stays above 70 degrees all the time. IMO it's bad for the engine. I had an 00 SERG and only put them on during what passes for winter in SoCal. I own a 03 SERK at the moment but with a detachable fairing on it, so I have pretty much the same config as you minus the lowers. That would be my first piece of advice, get the lowers off. Another thing I have that also seems to help is 1" thick shims on the floorboard bolts which gets my legs out away from the engine just enough that it seems to keep the fried thigh issue at bay. Somewhere on the site, there was a thread that discussed this small but very uselful item. Maybe if one of the photo memory types on the site sees this they can direct you to the thread.

I'll throw this out there, do what you will with it....but if your bike is running lean, it'll also run hotter......

I sat in traffic in DC Sunday for Rolling Thunder with a friend on a regular Ultra, his went into overheat mode 3 times atleast, mine didn't hit it once, and I didn't have a problem with the heat coming off of it like I did on my '04 Ultra.  I know I have an oil cooler over him, but I don't think it made that much of a difference, and it was hot as hell in DC Sunday......a guy on a Green '05 SE yelled over to me in traffic asking if mine was overheating as bad his was....had to tell him it wasn't.....
