What were the 08 SERK problems?
« on: July 25, 2011, 01:10:10 PM »

I'm thinking very seriously of selling my 06 Fatboy and buying a 08 SERK. I have seen on here that the 1st ones in 08 had a lot of problems but the MoCo were doing updates. I have dug back a few pages and can't seem to find a list of the things that were going wrong. I don't want to buy one unless the updates have been done and can anyone tell me if these updates have made their bikes very reliable?

I have a 08 SERK,it now has 18000 miles. My biggest complaint is warped rotors. Had the head gaskets replaced, but this was all under warranty. Bike has never broken down, has started every time. :oops:I hope that I'm not jinxing myself. best of luck with the new ride.

make sure the recalls/service campaigns were done.  There was 2.  Recall for fuel filter and a service campaign for leaking rear cylinder.  Dealer can run VIN to verify if it applied to the bike and if the work was done

Since doing the head gaskets twice, once at about 2000 miles and the second time for an upgrade to the gaskets and some minor engine work at 6000 miles, things are fine with almost 20000 on the bike. As well my front rotors are warped too! :'(

bought mine new (008 FLHRSE4, 105th Anniv, Copper/Black new, serial no 1096/1800); besides the factory recall for the head gaskets which were done (replaced) in advance of any head gasket leakage at around 5k miles, I had the two front rotors replaced at or near 10k miles (also warranted by my dealer). No other problems, no breakdowns, no repairs needed.....the MC is regularly services (fluids changes) which is performed by my trustworthy HD dealer (no, IMO not all HD dealer service depts are honest based upon my experience).

i would suggest that you 1) require all service records from the owner, 2) check with your HD dealer's service dept as their maintenance mgmt software will show all works done against the VIN (all work done by auth HD dealers that is), and 3) have the MC inspected fully by a senior HD service tech....

last thing you want is to "get the fever" and buy one that you should have passed on considering so many are out there for sale...i.e. www.chopperexchange.com, www.cycletrader.com, etc.

good luck and good riding

What rotors did you replace the warped ones with?
I have 13,000 miles on mine and the rotors are warped.

I'll be danged... I just took my 2008 SERK in for the 10K service a few weeks ago and it turns out that my rotors were warped as well...  I have extended warranty so that took care of the replacement but until I read this thread I didn't realize there was a trend...

I've got an 08 serk with rotor problems as well! When I had abt. 8000 mi on it, they needed replcing and the local dealers wouldn't do it because they weren't bad enough. Eventually I had them replaced but with much arguing about the safety. The bike now has 24000 mi. on it and again I can hardly use the front brake! Not very comforting to use in the twisties of the Black Hills when your front jump around like a rabbit on hot pavement. Supposedly not an out of tolerance front wheel though. Now having starter probs. as well, so am less than satisfied with the overpriced CVO!

My 08 SERK warped 3 set of rotors in 30 k miles, the dealer finally changed the front wheel and the warping stopped.  Aparently Alcoa had a machining problem in the rotor mounting area.

X2 New wheel did the trick. Of course mine stays in the shop so much the rotors don't get much work. Matter of fact thats where Maggie is right now!

My '08 SERK has had no problems, only have 6500 miles. You guy's must brake harder than me, I have no problems with the rotors, but 85% of my riding is outside the city.

Maggie just got out of shop. Defective cams. All this time I've never had full power from my bike. Wow, after 3 years I finally get to ride a 110!!

08 models built after mid-may are post recall bikes. you can check built date and if built after mid-may it will require no recall. mine was built post recall. 19000 mi. no problems :2vrolijk_21: dealer can tell you if you have v.i.n.what if anything has been done. i am only talking about the 110 engine.
