Lodging in Monument Valley Area?????????? Safety??
« on: July 26, 2011, 09:59:16 AM »

A group of us are going to ride the Four Corners area this fall and after reading some reviews of motels I am concerned. On day one I was planning to ride from Albuquerque NM to Tuba AZ city on SR 264 then up SR160 on day two. I have seen some poor reports about high prices and dangerous conditions that concern me greatly.

Does any one here have any experience in this area and have recommendations or warnings?

Thanks Mel.

Terrie and I have stayed here also.  Comfortable and clean, restaurant on the premises, coffee house in the parking lot as well.

To elaborate on Marty's comment......not only are all the reservations "dry", an Indian that we were talking to told us that you can't even bring alcohol onto a reservation and that it's strictly enforced by the Indian police (they had a name for them.....but I don't remember what they call the Indian police).

We also stayed at the Holiday Inn in Kayenta and they have a Hampton Inn there as well.  We talked about staying right in Monument Valley the next time, at http://www.gouldings.com/  Reviews are all good and this is where John Wayne stayed whenever he was making movies out there.  Here's the reviews... http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g57072-d119359-Reviews-Goulding_s_Lodge_Campground-Monument_Valley_Utah.html

Let me just say that at whatever level of  lodging you stay at in that area, they all seem to be over priced to me.  Of course what are you going to do.....there are so few and so many tourists that they have you over a barrel. :nixweiss:

Thanks guys. I have been there before(twice) but never rode a bike or stayed over night. I did live there for five weeks in Goudlings on an externship while in Dental school doing dentistry in the clinic there. Way cool experience but the lodging was provided for us. I think there is a lodge there still but I was hoping not to travel so hard and fast on the first day. Tuba City was sort of at the right distance.

The Indians can be kind of stand-off-ish and appear unfriendly to outsiders. Since they receive quite a bit of income from tourism I find that odd and not in their best interest. If anybody actually knows or has a relationship with the locals chime it.

As to the party subject. I bought beer in Mexican Hat and brought my own weed. :coolblue: I will not comment on the peyote and other narcotics. :-X

Here is a link to some pics that we took in the area last Sept.   http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=54514.msg787434#msg787434

I suggest doing the loop up through Mexican Hat via 163, then at Bluff, Ut. take 162 (merges with 41) to Hwy US 160.  Then either swing by four corners (just a few miles back down US 160 or go to Mesa Verde first then back down to four corners.  But Mesa Verde and the cliff dwellings are definately worth touring (include a minimum of 2 hours to at least view one set of the cliff dwellings.....there are several villiages). :2vrolijk_21:

Keep your camera around your neck all day because there are photo ops around every curve or over every hill!

We stayed at the Holiday Inn three times, confortables rooms but a little pricey.the Hampton Inn is cross over the road. Both are in Arizona.
The new hotel is at the Monument Valley village in Utah.
A few years ago,it was a free entrance and now you have to pay.

No I am unaware of Ribfest. Just a four or five day loop.

JCZ I have been that way and you are right it is the good stuff, but I was wanting a longer loop and was planning on taking SR261 out of Mexican Hat past Valley Of the Gods(stayed in a B&B there years ago) and then 95 up through Hanksville to I-70 down into Moab-La Sal---Naturita--Placerville--Ridgway and down Co 550 for the classic Ouray/Durango trip.

I have done the Cliff Dwellings before and would do it again if time allowed. The ladies HAVE to visit the HD dealers in the area for trinkets and shirts. We want a day ride up to Madrid with DessertHog(Simon), and any other members in the area if we can work it out. The dates are August 28-September 2. Let's ride guys. :bananarock:

Oh Doc you ain't kiddin bout dem sunsets, but don't the sun rise over the monuments? The Trading Post looks to the east doesn't it?

During our summer road trip we stopped @ cortez CO found a great bar restaurant with small selection of microbrews brewed on site owned by a fellow CVO owner gives 10% disc if staying at local hotel check it out at www.jfargos.com gives lots of Hotels along the main road around $80 for the nite
also found Dam Bar @ Page on the border AZ , UT right on lake Powell looked like a cool place to do an over niter if you get as far as Zion National park
"just do it" Yosemite NP pales by comparison

Is that a new place? I don't think that was there fifteen years ago when I was there last.

Dr>D,

As some mentioned I would look into staying in Mexican Hat, it is a short ride from Monument valley. We stayed in a hotel just as you come up from the river valley south of town. their is a motel there right near a restaurant called the "Swinging Steak". they actually grill steaks on a swinging grill and they have beer. Just on the south entrance of town their is another restaurant/motel complex.
