Gel seat question
« on: July 26, 2011, 05:55:07 PM »

I am ordering a seat from C&C and the question of gel came up. Of course I am looking for long distance comfort, but they mentioned that the gel gets REALLY hot when parked in the sun. Anybody run into this and found it to be a problem?

Never heard of C&C seats.  But I do have a gel pad that I have used.   Most seats are black anyway and in the sun will get pretty hot.  Once you get going,  the gel pad will make for a much better ride if you're trying to log a lot of miles.

I did not have one a few yrs ago on the way to Milwaukee from No. Carolina for the 100 yr HD celebration.........My azz starting aching pretty good on the way up and I bought the gel pad while in Milwaukee and it made a big difference for the return trip.

Another great alternative would be the Air Hawk.   They may not look "cool" (styling-wise),  but most that have made long distance trips and used them will (not leave home without 'em).

Only reason I bring up the heat issue is because they mentioned it to me. The gel pad with hold the heat longer when left out in the sun.

Do a search on this forum--C&C seats is a pretty popular choice for custom and replacement seats. Customer service and quality is top notch.

YES.

I have gel in my RoadSofa by Saddleman/Travelcade. Left in the sun it will fry you when you remount. It will also retain heat from the engine as you ride down the road. In the winter it becomes like BlueIce and will feel like those things you throw in the cooler to keep food cold. I have taken to throwing a sheepskin pelt over the seat for comfort.

At least these are my experiences. Others may vary.

That's exactly what I was looking for.......No gel for now..I can add it later if the seat proves to be uncomfortable on the long rides.

Thanks

If I had to do it all over again I just would have one with medical/memory foam.

So far the Memory Foam Mean City Cycles installed in my seat is working just fine. :2vrolijk_21:  Much better support than the stock padding.

FYI: When I told them I wanted long-distance comfort the gel option was never mentioned. Now, I may know why.

I ordered a C&C Fastback without gel a few months ago. Looks great and Chuck at C&C is really good to work with. Sent it back last month for the gel insert as most of my rides are greater than 250 miles. Can say the gel is a "bit" more comfy, but did not make a great deal of difference. Just my opinion.

I have a solo C&C, non-gel.  I like the seat and the styling is great but I've discovered it's not comfortable on long rides.  I need to buy my wife a new solo so I may end up trying a Corbin although I hear they are hard most people seem to say they are more comfortable on long rides.  My wife rode my bike a 150 miles and also complained about it so I know it's not just me.  She said her Harley Sundowner on the old Fat Boy was comfortable.  I've never actually experienced a comfortable 300+ mile seat but I know they exist.

I had a Corbin on my last bike and they are comfortable for long rides. I just like the fact that the C&C sits you a bit lower and the nose of the seat is more narrow than the Corbin. I sent my Corbin back twice for a "nose job" as they call it..it helped a little, but not that much. Unfortunately Corbin's customer service is a bit lacking when you can't be there to have them work on your seat in person. The only other choice for me would be a cross country trip to the shop to have them make me a seat. It would be a great excuse if I had the time! Seats are very personal so I am hoping my C&C experience will be better than yours was. If not, then I may have to gamble again on a Corbin.

I love my Corbin, but any ride over a couple hundred  miles I use my Air Hawk for comfort.

Full disclosure.  I do not own one of these but I'm inclined to try.  12 states n 2 weeks last year.  Want to long ride comfort.

I don't have a gel seat so can't comment on the heat or cold but I have been told that the gel also can harden over time and/or compress and/or push to the sides leaving the middle (where your butt touches the seat) flat. I opted for the Air Hawk and love it. The Air Hawk is like a bag with an egg carton in it and the pouches are filled with air instead of eggs. You can adjust the softness/hardness by blowing in or letting out air with a little hose that is attached. No tools needed just put your mouth on the hose and blow or twist the the end cap on  the hose to let out air.
