No more heated grips!
« on: July 27, 2011, 08:25:24 AM »

Well, my heated grips are shot again.  The dealer wants $500 for new ones installed.  I don't have an extended warranty so I will have to pay the whole amount.  I'm giving up on the heated grips because I'm convinced they aren't worth the money.  My question is how much trouble is it to remove the heated grips and replace with non-heated?  Would it require removal of the front fairing cap, radio, GPS, etc. to remove the wiring or can you just clip the wires at the grips and replace?  Any input would be appreciated.

If you still want heated grips do a search on this site for "Heat Demons". Several members have gone this route with good results.

I will say heated grips have been a major PITA for me. After screwing around with three sets from Harley, and not to mention time spent installing/reinstalling, I finally tried a set of Heat Demons.... Installed my first and only set two years ago and they are still going strong.. IMO don't mess with the HD version and try the Heat Demons  :2vrolijk_21:

I read that the Heat Demons are not compatible with handlebars with inserts, but you have the same bike as mine and we have internal wiring.  Am I missing something here?  Did you install them yourself?  If so, how much trouble were they to install?

Maybe in all the "global sourcing" that Harley is doing now (read- CHINA) the grips fell victim to lowest cost crap.  However, the heated grips that my wife had installed on her '03 Lowrider when new are still working awesome and she has them on anytime the temp is below 70 degrees!  If the MoCo sells crap then definately look to the aftermarket brands.

Mine on my 06 wrk great after 65,000 miles, my only complaint is the rubber is sticky after all this time.

Steve Drane HD keeps saying that it is 'un-clear' whether they work with throttle by wire...I wish they would get it 'cleared up'!

The Heat Demons will work just fine on your bike and are not that big a deal to install.  I would not recommend cutting the wires at the grips and leaving them...pull them out from inside the fairing.  If you install the Heat Demons, you'll need to get new, non-heated grips of your choice.

The HD grips have been hit or miss for several years.  I definitely would not pay for new ones on my dime.

I have chubby 575's and the grips without the knob on the end. They were installed by Jim (hddude) I already had the air switches on the left grip for my legend shocks so he installed the switch (chrome) on the right side and it has little lights to show how high you have them. I can say that the heat works much better with the Demons and I have not had them on or close to high yet. My stock ones were only working on high when I had this done so I decided to add them and haven't looked back. I know warranty for some but I just can't believe some have replaced with HD ones 3-4 times. For me it's to time consuming to keep going to the dealer especially when it's 11/2-2 hours each way for me. You could give Jim a call he is real good about helping.

Heated gloves certainly work, but you've got all the associated wiring to deal with.  Not a huge deal, but certainly more trouble than pressing a button.

Having both, the gloves are probably slightly better than the grips overall.  Yes you do have to unplug when you get off the bike, unless you use the battery powered ones.  If it gets cold, then having both is nice, as the gloves only heat the outside and the grips only heat the inside.  If it's snowing or sleeting, the gloves are probably a better choice if you're only going to have one.  Your hands will be wet, but they will be warm.  I just run a battery tender plug up to the front of the seat, so it's easily accessible for heated clothing.

On a really cold day I use both.  Heated gloves heat the top of your hand - not the palm.  Heated grips heat the palms - not the top of your hand.  Granted that heated grips work best with lightweight gloves and the heated gloves are somewhat thick but some of the heat from the grips does get through.
