SYN3 Oil Temperature Question
« on: May 29, 2006, 10:52:05 PM »

My 2003 SERK2 has had SYN3 in it since about 1500 miles (it has 13,500 miles on it now).

I had the bike in for its 12,500 mile interval over the winter, and it seems to be running unusually HOT ever since.  [smiley=nervous.gif]

I got off a ride (normal speeds) today (90 degrees out), and the oil temp gauge read 245 degrees!  :o

What is the normal temp range for SYN3?

Temps in the 240's are normal for the 103 motors on a hot day

I'm using the Mobil 1 MT4X 10w40 in one of my bikes (a Ducati) and noticed a 4-5 degree drop in oil temp from the Shell syn it had in it previously. They also make a 20w50 VTWIN, which is what I'm going to use after the 1K service.  There's a whole thread on syn oils under general CVO.  But on a hot day here in Alabama, those kind of temps are not unusual, particularly in traffic. Starts cooking the boys at stoplights.... ;D

mine usually runs about 220 no matter what the outside temp is.
i question the accuracy of those gauges anyway.

1st thing, you said youve run syn3 since 1500 miles, Your bike came with a synthetic harley oil in it from the factory. Have you added anything to your bike such as lower fairings? or any type of fork wind deflectors? The next thing I would ask you to try, which Ive been meaning to tell all,  Since 2001 Ive used royal purple synthetics in all my bikes trans, engine and primary what a noticable difference in all components. It takes away alot of racket (noises) and just does a noticable difference. I beleive it to be the best synthetic oil around. By the way it also tests better than all synthetics, so give it a try, Ken

03 SERK's did not come with Syn 3.  They changed some of the bikes around then, but not the 03 SERK.  I think the 03 Deuce came with Syn 3.  I changed mine to syn 3 @ 100 miles.  I am thinking of going to Ammsoil.

Good move. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Amsoil and Mobil V-twin are what a lot of us are using and have had good results.

103_RK...

I could have sworn my SERK had Syn3 oil when I bought it new.

I know my SEEG did, but I thought the SERK did too.

I believe he is right about them not coming w/Syn 3. [smiley=nixweiss.gif] Have a friend that has a SERK2, and remember him talking about switching to Syn 3 when my I got my bike.
