H-D Automatic Primary Chain Adjuster
« on: May 30, 2006, 11:49:21 AM »

I just took the new bike in for the 1,000 mile service and got a call from the dealer just now.  I told them that the bike was shaking really bad at idle and to go ahead and do a tune on it... the installed a map at delivery and I figured it need some tweaking.  Turns out the primary chain had no slack at all and they think that's what was causing the bad shake.  The dealer had already talked to H-D and they DFS'd (whatever that is) and instructed the dealer to put the stock parts back on.  They called me to see if I had the originals and even though I asked for all the take-offs, checking the boxes resulted in not finding any of the primary related parts with the exeception of the stock inner primary.  I called the dealer back with the news and they said they'd have to order parts and I was looking at 7-10 days before everything was in... bad news.  I just thought I'd post this for anyone thinking having having the automatic adjuster installed.

I'm no super mechanic but that sounds way out there to me. I just can't comprehend how the chain and adjuster would make the bike shake. That's a new one. I'd sure like to know more about this. [smiley=confused5.gif]

Was the dealer saying that the chain tensioner had failed? based on the way the auto tensioners work their should not be slack in the chain. The tensioner should take up the slack unless its needed then it backs off. [smiley=nixweiss.gif] As far as a chain being too tight causing the shake  [smiley=confused5.gif]

I remember reading some cautionary instructions when installing the ones in mine and Beags bikes. Kinda wondered at the time what would happen if you didn't do as told. i don't have em in front of me, so I can't say what. Maybe this is it and your tensioner wasn't installed properly. I have about 3k on mine as does Beags and neither of us has had any problems. Matter of fact, we're both sold on the product. Methinks your dealer is effed somehow.

Sounds fishey to me too,  I have one in my bike,  and it seems to be working fine.  I would think if the chain was loose,  the tensioner must have failed....just a thought..

I remembered someone saying earlier that there were some instructions that should be paid attention to.  It could well be the dealer screwed something up when it was installed.  We'll see what happens and I'll post the result when I get the bike back.

Sounds fishy to me...don't see a way for the tensioner to make it so tight the bike would run rough, even if it was installed incorrectly and had the chain TOO tight.  Doesn't make sense.... [smiley=confused5.gif]

I've had mine on for 1200 miles so far and no issues.  It's a bit quiter and shifts into neutral with ease now.

I have had one installed on every Harley I have owned. Probably over 150,000 miles and no problems. If you do not install them correctly the chain will not tension properly. I feel like your mechanic did something incorrectly on the install, but you will propably never get them to admit to it. My 2 cents worth

I'm sure you're right about the mechanic and about him admitting it too, they did tell me everything is covered under warranty so I'm happy about that.  It shifted perfectly although it did sound like something was rubbing, like metal against nylon or something.  I'm sure they'll get it sorted out but I hate missing the opportunity to ride it this week since I'm off, at least I still have something to ride.

Ok, here's an update.
I got a call from the dealership yesterday that the bike was ready so I went to pick it up.  The service department told me that they had been instructed to remove the automatic chain tensioner and replace it with the stock unit which is what they did.  I asked if they'd had a lot of trouble with them and they admitted that they hadn't done many and there were issues with high horsepower motors using the automatic adjusters.  Sounds like a line of BS to me.  :-/
As far as the pronounced shake at idle, I found out on the way home that it's still there.  They said the map was fine... could it be the redesigned motor mount I've read about??  All I can compare it to is the SEEG and it's much smoother at idle.  What do you guys think?  Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob

I'd be looking for a better service dept.  The two issues are not even related...  The chain tensioner would be a driveability issue and have nothing to do with the engine shaking at idle.  I believe what your feeling is normal with an unbalanced motor.  I have seen roadkings shaking so bad at idle I thought (no offense road kingers) the engine was coming out of the frame.  Is your idle below 1200 rpm?

Yes it is below 1200, the shake is much worse than both my RK and the SEEG.

I agree. The primary chain tensioner should have nothing to do with it. Even if it was installed wrong, it should cause more shake and vibration at speed than at idle. I have heard of no problems with the automatic tensioners. Find yourself a better service dept.
