Well I had a close one yesterday! Hauling A$$ up the 8 ball hwy Sunday around 5pm. I was late for dinner and 50 miles from home so I was pushing it a bit. Out of the blue a damn Turkey Vulture flew out of the left side ditch right into me! No time to slow down just brace for the crash! The Bird hit my left handlebar at the clutch master cylinder. Felt like hitting a 10lb bag of Chit! Really jolted the bike and started into a high speed wobble. About 10 reps and got the bars under control! Still not sure how! Adrenaline flowing fast 1st thought was is the bike OK? My mirror spun around but other than that no apparent damage. Then my wrist started to hurt bad! I could move it around so not broke probably just sprained! Never stopped or even looked back! There was no edge on the road there and its a big hillside down to the Ohio river. Thank god I didn't go down! Nobody any where near us so if we went of the road no one could see us. Definitely scared the crap out of me. This is the 3rd time I have hit a bird! This was the first time I hit  a giant bird! All I can say is I am still freaked out! That sucker had a 4ft wing span. I have to believe the tall bars may have save my life and definitely saved me from taking a huge bird to the face or chest! All I can say is WTF..................


Irony: Lost a friend (Bob) on the 8 ball highway over 20 years ago. he was riding alone and took a bird to the chest ran off the road knocked unconscious and landed in 6 inches of water and drowned! he was not found until the next day. Now when I hauled it out of Augusta yesterday it was just after 5. I swear as soon as we got out of town I thought its time to really watch for deer and then Bob popped into my head and I thought about bird strikes? What is the chance that within 5 miles I hit that damn vulture?

Very lucky to have not gone down with a hit like that.  I have hit birds going around 70 and they hurt like hell.  Glad you made it through the ordeal.

You have me beat. The biggest bird I have hit was when I took a quail to the center of my chest at 75 mph. Damn near took me off the bike.

Another time I was on my sportbike (a CBR600RR) and went through a flock of sparrows. Hit several of them and about a week later I noticed a bad smell from my bike. I started looking for the source and found a rotting sparrow stuffed in one of the small air intake holes in the fairing. It wass way in there and a bitch to get out.

I can certinly relate to the bad smell! We hit one of the native gray & white birds near Rapid city in 06. I was doing 80 and it hit right at my lower triple tree on the low rider. Bird went off like a bomb spraying both of us! Beefy ask me what is that and I told her blood, guts, & chit... when she interupted and said enough! We went on to the holiday inn and spent the night. Next morning you could not get within 10 ft of the bike! It stunk bad! Gas tank was pin stripped with feathers and blood! I have a pic at home I will have to post. We headed straight to the car wash. Hitting him head on was a jolt but nothing I thought would take me down. Yesterday was freaking wild and I damn near chit myself!

I am glad that turned out OK. Have hit a couple birds with my foot streched out on the highway pegs on the old Road King, never a giant bird, feathers everywhere. Oh and one beagle but I missed the rabbit he was chasing,stayed upright each time,WHEW!

I can identify with you on the buzzard hit, Face.  I hit one in S.C. coming thru a forest as he flew up out of the tree line.  I was running 70mph and just had time to duck my head to the side as the buzzard hit my 3 inch windscreen and tumbled over me and almost collected the guy riding close behind me.  The 3rd rider thought the big azzed bird had hit us both since seeing all the splattering.  Left a softball sized spot of blood & guts/feathers on my screen, but didn't crack it.  Tough stuff.  Scared the puddin' outa me.  My buddy said he's gonna rename my scooter 'critter-killer' since I keep having run ins with forest critters.  Of course, it was a cage that finally took me down and not a forest critter.  Guess we need to slow down, huh?  spyder
