Harmon Kardon acting up???
« on: August 13, 2011, 07:25:33 PM »

One of the things that happened to me on my way to Sturgis was my HK stereo crapped out.  Occasionally the screen will light up with all my FM presets but no controls.  Not from the handlebars or from the rubber push buttons.  No sound.

SOOO....

Do I send it off to Iron Cross audio or do I replace with an aftermarket option?

Let's hear your opinions.

I hear Ironhorse is terrific.    Fast turn around also.   I'd try them if no warrantee applies.  :2vrolijk_21:

At the top of this forum there is a section for "stickys" where you'll find the procedure for conducting HK self-diagnostic procedure.  That may help identify the problem.

With the CB/intercom and amp on your bike, I'd suggest having the HK replaced under warranty or repaired by Iron Cross Audio if out of warranty.  An aftermarket radio won't allow you to have the CB/intercom features you now have, and your amp harness would require reworking to be adapted to an aftermarket radio.

These problems are often caused by broken fairing brackets and/or riser bolts hitting the bottom of the radio.

Good luck with your choice.

Thanks CVOstu

That is the company I mentioned in my first post.  They get rave revues here so that is were I was planning.
I thought Ironhorse was someone different.

Thanks

MY HK unit is doing the same and I'm just curious what the problem with yours turned out to be?  Did you stay with HK or go aftermarket?

If you replace the radio under warranty you will still have to repair it again once it craps out again after the warranty expires, i know first hand cause I'm on my fourth! The last time I was in the same place you are and debating if I should send it to Iron Cross, I sent it out and had them do the aux mod in the rear as well, they fixed the problems... I had a cracked board, no issues since.

Save youself money, time and drama, just send it to Iron Cross.

Mine was out of warranty.  I sent it to Iron Cross and they could not repair it.  They were great in helping me with it and even though mine was beyond repair, I would recommend at least give them a call to see if they can help you.
I did replace mine with another HK but have thought since I maybe should have went aftermarket.  My HK GPS is also crapped out and that was probably the main reason I stayed with the HK, along with the intercom/CB.  HD has an exchange program that will save you some bucks...you will need to talk to your dealer about that.
Good Luck,,,and let me know if I can help.
