2012 rider backrest options
« on: August 14, 2011, 01:34:54 PM »

Alright all you brainiacs.....figure it out and tell us are options.  I'm really surprised Harley took this option/ability away, there's been a few comments about it in other threads, but I'm just totally miffed by it.  I depend on one for longer rides to the point where if there truly is no option, as much as I've totally fell in love with the ruby red SG, it's a deal breaker for me.

So first, those few forum members out there that have already taken delivery of one, does the provisions exist under the seat to utilize one if the seat itself is changed out ?  I'm not talking about the vertical bracket necessarily that one clips into, but the threaded attach points into the frame itself that the vertical bracket mounts to.

JCZ or someone else, I've never had or seen a Corbin seat for the streetglides, does it not require as well that vertical bracket for attachment ?

Shed some light on this you guys, if there truly is no option/solution here I'm totally blown away as my back requires one.  I'm not big and fat at 205, but I've used my back for 40 years and it likes to rest these days !!!

I'm not speaking for JC, but the Corbin seats have their own hole for the backrest built into the seat, so don't need a bracket at all on the bike.  The Corbin backrests are attached to a about a 3/4" square post that fits down into a female "socket" on the top rear of the seat.  The hole is covered up with a leather flap.

You can see what I'm talking about here:  http://www.corbin.com/harley/baggers/hdflh9-s.shtml   Either the Classic Solo, which has a seperate pillion, or the Solo Tour, which, if you're a tall person and don't ride 2 up much, might be another option to look at.  Either accepts the driver's backrest made by Corbin...there are several options on the backrest "look".

Sweet....well at least there's that option then.  So one of you current owners chime in and tell us what's under the stock seat....I'm really hoping the threaded inserts are there for the normal setup as I liked the 2011 seat and would go this route if possible.

Due to being so tall (6'4") and 220 lbs. coupled with previous back surgery and years of back problems, I recently took my backrest support rod to a local welder and had it extended 1".  Now I can ride for hours at a time without any nagging back problems.......like the old days.  It's amazing the difference a backrest (and like she says.....just one more inch) can make!

The area to attach the HD backrest support is still under the seat just like any other dresser. So if you change seats to a slotted seat you can use the backrest with no problems. Danny Gray, C&C and some other brand I don't care for and would never recommend, all have the backrest bracket built into the seat so that is always an option.

That is great to know.  As I too was thinking the 2011 seat, which allows for a rider backrest, would be the way to go on the Ruby Red one I have coming next month.  Now just need to know if the new chrome strips they put on the fender will need to come off.

From the pictures I've seen of the '12 SESG I don't think it (stock seat) is designed for a rider backrest. :nixweiss:

Look on page 353 of the 2012 HD P&A catalog, it doesn't even show a rider backrest for the 2012 CVO SG.  What a major F*** up if thats the case.  What could possibly be the reasoning for that besides $$$$. Buy another seat after spending 33 large (insert here and twist).  I took my driver backrest and mount off my 09 SG installed on my 10 SG and its now on my Krypto!  (GEEZ got lucky with that)

I was in speaking to a dealer about this exact topic yesterday... the 2012 SESG stock seat will not work with a rider backreast :(

I looked at the two-piece seat on the SERGC yesterday and unless they make some kind of a mount that fits on the two retaining bolts where the pillion seat slides in to, there isn't any provisions for mounting a back rest on this seat.  I could see how something could be engineered though...
