Help! What the heck do I have here?
« on: August 15, 2011, 10:17:54 PM »

A co-worker bought a lake house and found this in the attic. It has some Harley parts inside (2 piece bars, starter, peg mounts, grips, etc.) and wants to know if it is a Harley tour pack. I don't know, we were unable to find anything like it on the net. So I offered to ask the experts here (Can you hear me Jimmy).

The bar on the table wraps around the side where the holes are. Also inside is the luggage rack.

Older tourpack for a FLH probably from the 50"s or 60's

That is an aftermarket piece that was very popular in the 70's, until H-D came out with the King Tour-pac in 1982. I had one of those big white fiberglass monsters on my '76 FLH. I believe the Vendor was Ray-Cad.

Attached is a photo of a ’75 FLH with one of these tour-pac’s that I found on the web.

Now this makes me curious,,, who invented the Batwing, saddle bags and touring trunk, HD or the aftermarket folks???? I have always thought it all was an HD design and invention.  :nixweiss:

I have the pogo stick for the seat, he said he will bring the seat in next week.
Is that a 2 up seat in the picture? If so, my wife sure is spoiled!

Your wife spoiled?  Say it ain't so!

Anyway, not that my 2 cents is needed, but I agree with djkak post #5.  My buddy has one of those on his 1970-71-72 FLH (I'm thinking about the Johnny Cash Cadillac that he got "one piece at a time").  I have one of those early tour paks, but it's about half as tall...which makes it "chopped", I guess, and it sure takes up a lot of room in my garage.  Anybody need it?

The really early fairings were made by Wixom (I think), Craig Vetter.  Maybe even Bates.

The seat was called a “Buddy Seat”. The coil springs behind the seat post were designed to be dropped down when you carried a passenger. You had to be real close to anyone that you thought about taking for a ride because you would be real close to anyone that you thought about taking for a ride! I’m sure that the phrase “riding sausage” was coined the first time two dudes took a ride together on a Buddy Seat. ;D

Now this makes me curious,,, who invented the Batwing, saddle bags and touring trunk, HD or the aftermarket folks???? I have always thought it all was an HD design and invention.  :nixweiss:

As I remember it, H-D introduced the fiberglass Batwing and Tour-pac in ’69; the glass bags in ’63. The Tour-pac was standard on the ’76 Liberty FLH and again in ’78 on the 75th Anniversary Bagger, but it wasn’t big enough for mamma’s hair drier. Most folks hated the Batwing at first. I ran the standard windshield on my covered wagons through 1977. It seems that some people were moving other people’s cheese around even back then. :)
