Hydraulic Clutch bleed valve fitting leaking?
« on: August 20, 2011, 05:37:05 PM »

My 2011 SESG started showing signs of leaking fluid from around the hydraulic clutch bleed valve at the lower fitting....initially I tightened the fitting about a quarter turn and thought that would take care of it but it continues to leak and appears to be coming from around the threads. Anyone have similar problem and a fix? This just started at about 3k miles.

If it's tight and still leaking, it likely has a bad or damaged seat.  Tightening it more will make it worse.  Sounds like replacing it is in order...   :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks for the info.....wasn't real sure about how the fitting worked....could not find any pictures of how it all was together and didn't think of a seat, but it makes sense now. Thanks

Had that problem w/my :pumpkin: when I first got it in '04. Tech put some plumbers tape around the threads and never had another drop leak out... might try that to see if it stops the leak. :nixweiss:

Yup, you beat me to it.  I was just about to mention that the actual seat for that bleeder screw is in the cover, so it might be wise to let the dealer handle the leak versus just buying another bleeder.  If you botch up the threads, or depending on the dealership if they think they can blame the problem on you whether you did anything wrong or not, that cover runs about $250.  Let the warranty handle it.  And I wouldn't accept that Teflon tape or plumbers pipe dope "fix" either.  The seal is not supposed to be at the threads; this isn't a water or gas pipe.

If the fluid is getting to your threads - it's already past the seat - which is bad.  You got lucky with plumbers tape on the threads - and it's a band-aid at best.  Maybe o.k. in an emergency on the road - but not a permanent fix I would consider...  Just saying....   :nixweiss:

Actually, aren't there two halves to a seat - one half on the fitting and one half in the cover?  Either  - or both - could be damaged.  If it's a warranty issue, give the dealer a shot.  If it's out of warranty, inspect both components and look for the flaw.  To be sure of a fix, replace both...     :2vrolijk_21:

On a new bike do not fix it yourself, Let dealer do it under warranty and stay away from thread tape, this is not the type of fitting thread tape was designed for. It has a lower seat in the cover and should seal on its on. Do not give warranty a reason to deny you when home remedies don't work. Now on a older bike and @ your expense, home stuff it fine, but not a new bike with full warranty.

If it's a chrome bleeder might be worth a try replacing it with an unchromed piece.  Woudn't be the first time the chrome on the end of a bleeder was too hard to seat properly and leaked a bit.  Always like to try simple cheap solutions first.

Yes, I am definately going to let the dealer handle this under warranty.....just wanted to have something to go on before taking it to them....sometimes they get stuck on this crap that " they all do it" or some other excuse.....just like the top end motor noise....sounds like a diesel with all the clatter. Thanks for all the responses.
