2009 FLTRSE3 RIDER ADJUSTABLE BACKREST INSTALLMENT
« on: August 21, 2011, 09:35:23 PM »

Has anyone had problems trying to install Harleys adjustable backrest? I started installing the unit for a 2009 Road Glide on my wife's FLTRSE3 today and it doesn't seem to fit the stock seat at all. The seat opening seems to be an inch too far to the rear---just trying to put the seat back on was stretching the seat leather and any adjustment would continue to tear the leather. This is the part number specified in the HD P & A catalog for a 2009 Road Glide. Are these different from the CVO fitment?  Any help is appreciated.

The bracket on mine is about an inch back from the slot in the seat. The seat has plenty of room underneath to accommodate the brackets placement. Removing the rider's backrest itself is simple enough but when I want to reinsert the backrest I have to gently pull the passenger side of the seat toward the rear of the bike enough for me to see the bracket. There should be three mounting positions on the bracket itself so you can fine tune the placement of the backrest by moving the bracket forward or backward on the fender. I have mine as far back as possible. You might want to try adjusting the position of the bracket to the forward position if you cannot get the slot in the seat to line up to your satisfaction.

Thanks for the responses so far. BTAman, it sounds like you have the manually adjustable backrest, which we may try next. The one I'm installing now is the spring loaded one with the cable and lever you can adjust on the fly. The unit under the seat isn't adjustable, it mounts in one position and is a lot larger than the manual unit. I just don't think it's made for the CVO seat.

Mine is the manual squeeze adustment.  Pretty simple, just use the thumb on one side and middle finger with the other.  She shouldn't stand still for the remote control unit on her scooter.  Next thing, you'll be needing it for a test drive and then you won't put it back.

How often would somebody want to change the position of the backrest anyway? IMO most people would play with it only until they found the sweet spot and never change it again.

Not sure what the problem is. I have a sundowner seat, and no problem. I really like the adj backrest when riding solo.
