1k Mile Service

Other than avoiding any warranty questions, do you find having the dealership perform the 1k service is worthwhile?

I would guess the answer lies with how competent you dealer has proven itself historically in addition to your mechanical skill/desire to wrench yourself. Many folks just feel warm and fuzzy going over their bike themselves.

With a service manual the 1k service is a breeze. JMO

I've always performed all services on all three of my bikes and never had problems getting warranty attention when needed. If you end up performing your own service work, I recommend that you get in the habit of logging your work just as the dealer would...

That totally depends on the quality of the service department and the person doing the service.  Many places assign such work to the least capable individual, not the real certified techs.  And many places do little more than an oil change, blowing off most of the rest of the checklist even though you're paying for a complete service.  If you trust your dealership to do things correctly, and you don't want to do it yourself, go ahead.  Or you can have the service performed at an independent shop if you have one you trust more than the dealership.  There is no warranty implication, regardless of what some might tell you.  You can have the maintenance performed anywhere, including your own garage, without impacting warranty coverage.  Just document everything and keep receipts for any parts and lubricants in case someone were to question if the maintenance had been performed.  The first thing I purchase when buying a new bike is the shop manual; I highly recommend doing that even if you don't plan on doing most of your own wrenching.

I second the recommendation to buy the service manual.  It has saved me countless hours and dollars.  I have done some things I would not have known how to without the manual.  And I have refrained from doing some things I do not feel confident doing.  Helps you get to know the workings for your bike for sure.  :2vrolijk_21:

I third the recommendation about buying the manual. :2vrolijk_21: I have all the manuals (Parts, Touring, SE Supplement, and Electronic) available for my bike and I don't even work on it. It's good to have them so you can't be BS'd about something... knowledge is power even if you can't do the job yourself.

I have no idea how competent my local dealer is. I have not had a problem where I could judge their abilities. It's a big unknown.

Thanks for the replies.

I forth the recommendation,  :2vrolijk_21:  Although i didn't mention the manual in my previous post on this topic, it is an absolute 'must-have' if you plan on doing the slightest of any servicing on your HD...
