The Odds remain, stacked up against all us Riders....

take a moment to visit the www.NHTSA.gov , FARS website and review the stats as involve motorcycle incidents/accidents....

48% is an alarming rate...and thats 2009 data.

Don't quite understand the warning here but, of course, appreciate the concern.  Statistics without context are often problematic.  Misused stats can be even more so.

The statistics cited don't speak to frequency of accidents, greater or lower trends of accidents, causation nor anything else about accident likelihood.  Just says that of 4595 fatal accidents in their 2009 statistical year collisions involving a motor vehicle were more likely to cause those fatalities than are collisions with other things or non-collision accidents.

One might assume, though the stats don't say this, that more motorcycle accidents involve other motor vehicles.  There's a lot of (actually almost all) context that's left out of that data page.  Without that all we really know from that page was that someone looked at 4595 fatal accidents and that 48.2% of them involved a motor vehicle.

Don't take this the wrong way.
But if I had to think about the danger, or possible chance of danger every time I did something.
WOW, I would go crazy!!!
Would never want to do anything, just stay in the house looking up how dangerous it is to use the computer to look up CRAP. :confused5:
Think about all the things one could worry about.

1. If I get up I could fall down and break my hip. :nervous:
2. If I get in the car, could be in a wreck. :nervous:
3. If I get a shower before I get in the car, I could slip and fall breaking my neck! :nervous: :nervous: :nervous: :nervous: :nervous: :nervous:
The high point is then I could stop worrying about wrecking the car or falling and breaking my hip.  ;D
So things are looking up at this point.  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:
Well, wait a minute, maybe not so much. :confused5:
Now I have to worry about the ride to the Hospital because I may get a overworked medic or someone may hit us while going through a red light.
OMG, we are going to run a red light, now I'm really worried. :nixweiss: :nixweiss:
What are the stats on getting hit in a ambulance while in route to hospital.
Once at the Hospital the real worrying begins.
Now I gotta wonder the stats on how many people died at this hospital, what is there reputation with neck injuries, how are there doctors her.
WOW, this never seems to end.

Sorry for the rant guys.
We all have enough worry in our lives, why start adding stats to it.
Ride safe and most of all,  ENJOY!
That's why we do it.

P.S.
Wonder what the stats are for people getting carpel tunnel while typing rants like this?
Hell, I better look it up.
Hope you guys enjoyed my rant and please fill free to add to it, as I know most of will.

Sometimes it's best not to look things up...for fear of finding out what you don't want to know anyway.

Being willing to be familiar with safety data isn't the same thing as being spoked by that data.  There's no such thing as too much accurate information.  Trick is knowing whether the info is accurate or bs and how much context impacts the data.

I talked to a guy who had a minor get-off and was telling me he was considering giving up riding. I asked him "If you were injured in a car accident would you never get into a car again? If you slipped in the shower and got a serious head injury would you stop showering?".

February will be 7 years since I crashed on a bike and was nearly killed. Spent 30 days in the trauma center, endured 10 surgeries, and was unable to work for 6 months. As soon as I could walk I rode the bike to the gym and physical therapy. The thought of not riding any more never crossed my mind and my wife never even mentioned it.

For some of us, riding is not just something we do, it's a big part of who we are. It's our therapy, our escape, and let's us at least feel free in a world with too many rules and regulations.

Is it a dangerous activity? Yes, but that's part of the attraction, isn't it?

I think I'd rather chance a crash than be spoked  :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:
