Tour Pak & Saddlebag lights
« on: June 08, 2006, 04:36:10 PM »

Just an FYI for anyone that has the 54331-04 tour pak and saddlebag lights installed.  If one of the saddlebag lights go out and you don't bother to look at ANYTHING before just going down to buy a replacement (individual bag replacement light at $34.00!) you might be screwing up.

All power goes to the light in the lid of the tour pak first.  The logic controller for all the lights (so they turn off automatically) is there.  Apparently the little logic board can fail such that any one light is non-functional while the others behave normally.  So if a saddlebag light goes out take your test light or meter and make sure there is power getting to it before replacing it.  If powered, buy a saddlebag light.  If no power don't even screw with the individual replacement of the lid light/controller.  Just get a new 54331-04 kit and have yourself a couple of spare saddlebag lights for about 25 bucks extra.

Don is a psychic, or is it psycho, depending upon who you ask  ;D

Actually, he rides around with a dead cat near his oil pan, but that's a whole different thread.! But, none the less, he's right up there at the head of this class with HD knowledge, especially things electrical/electronic IMHO.

Oh, that's easy.  After hours and hours in the rain during a trip back east my left saddlebag light was no longer shining.  So, like a dipstick, I did the basic math of no shiney=burned out light.  Add in one trip to the dealership to pick up a new light, subtract $34 from my wallet, and gain absolutely nothing.

So then I actually looked at it........

The guy at the parts counter was good enough to take back the light I'd just bought.  The lid light is one component with the light, logic board, bracket and long main harness all supplied as an assembly.  They didn't stock that as a replacement part by itself.  But even if they had it would have been only a little over $25 less than the entire kit (and the kit they had in stock).  So bought the kit, replaced the bad part, and have two saddlebag lights in the spare parts drawer.

I have the LED's in my Tour Pak.  Had them replaced last year after the older Tour Pak light drained my battery by not turning off when the Tour Pak lid was closed.  I have only had a slight problem with my LED Tour Pak lights not working when I attempted to turn it on.  They have worked continually without any failure ever since [smiley=confused5.gif]and I don't know what the problem was when the LED's or why they didn't work.
Maybe "[smiley=oops.gif]" I didn't press on the light right!!

I'd like to change my tour pack light to the LED new one. Is it a plug and play proposition if you have the old tour pack light?

CVOwner, [highlight]it is pretty much plug and play!![/highlight] [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]  You will have to remove your old light housing and the new led light goes into the same spot.  They also included wire ties and mounting clamps for the inside of the tour pak.  Just plug into the wire where you removed your old light wire and you will be good to go.  There are also extra plugs for your saddlebag lights as well, which are already built into the line for you.

I'm not sure why but the tourpak light that came on my 05 had a different connector than the LED light had so the wiring harness had to be replaced as well.  Mine was a very early 05, August 04, which might explain it.
