I am sure old topic, but I thought I would throw it out there to see what everyone has to say today!
I am going to either go with LED or HID for a Street Glide.
This is a single light application,(no passing lights), so need the best wide band possible.
Who has done what and which would be the best for night riding.

This has been my experience.  I had HID's on my Road King, and I now have the HD LED headlight on my street glide.  To me, the HID's were much brighter, especially on high beam.  The LED headlight puts out a much wider light pattern.

The reflectors are different so it's not an apples to apples comparison.  But which shot down the road farther?

Spend the $ and install the Mo Co Led lamp. Rode home last night from the HD museum with my father who has a FLHX with HD's Led assembly,
I was riding my Ultra with Piaa super white bulbs in the headlamp & passing lamps. The dispersion of the Led made my set up look like a flashlight.
Had doubt's before seeing in person for the money, but i'm sold.

I had the HID setup from Harley (still for sale if interested) and replaced it with the LED kit (headlamp and passing lamps) and would have to say the HID is brighter with the HID high beam activated but the low beam is not as intense as the LED low by itself. IMO, what really lights up the road is the LED passing lamps, those things are incredible but most SG owners don't want to install passing lamps to throw off the sleek look of the fairing.

PM me if your interested in the HID kit I have. It is simple to install and has the upgraded HID high beam with the extra ballast. It's all plug and play and includes the Harley HID headlamp assembly, wiring, fuseholders, etc.

After testing all sorts of lights on my SED and my SEUC, I can state that the best light out there is the old Kuryakyn HID system that was made by Sylvania Valeo. I compared that against the stock lighting, the Harley HID, the Harley LED and the TruckLite LED, and there was no comparison. Those lights were in a class by themselves.  Too bad they discontinued them in favor for the less costly LED's.  That said, the Harley HID was crap. Still have that sitting on my bench, but those were wrose than the stock halogen lamps.  Between the Harley LED and the TruckLite LED - head lamps only, the Harley performs a bit better and has a more consistent pattern I think. However, you can't beat the price point on the Trucklite, which I think is a real bang for the buck deal. I will say I was blown away by the Trucklite passing lights. Those babies rock!  That all said, if I was to put together the Ultimate set up, I would go with the Kuryakyn HID, if I could find the 7" version around somewhere still, and the Trucklite LED passing lights.

I would say low beam to low beam, they are about the same.  The high beams on the HID's would light up the next county though.

Leading many rides here in Nor Cal, most have the HIDs.  However, one member of this forum had the LED lights installed in both his head light and passing lamps.  His is the only LED bike that I've had opportunity to view first hand.

Straight on from the front (just headlight) about the same.  However, perphrially (light cast to the sides) hands down it's the HIDs. 

At times, riding in the twisties there may be ten bikes behind me streatched out.  Then all of a sudden it appears there's one less bike......until he gets back in a straight line of vision directly behind.  My wife and I use the Nolan wireless intercom and talk back and forth, bike to bike........she's also noticed it.  She'll tell me "we're missing one" then another moment or two it comes back into view, once it aligns directly behind us.

At my age (eyes getting bad at night) I need all the perphreal vision I can get.

No LED replacement housings.  Only option would be aftermarket H4 kits in place of the original bulbs.

Terry, for what it's worth I've been completely satisfied with an alternative on the old 2000 SERG.  Several had professed that the optics of the reflector was much better on the European version of the headlight than on the DOT version.  At the time I needed to replace mine anyway as it was flaking off inside.

The European version was already hardened so I got to lose the ugly clear cover the older bikes had.  That was a beneficial byproduct.  But using that reflector housing and a good pair of readily available Silverstar bulbs made the bike very good at night.  Can do interstate speeds at night and not begin to outrun the headlights.  Dispersion out to the sides is good too.  It is 90-95% as good as the dual HID on the red bike with much less hassle.

LEDs from Harley the complete change will cost you 900.00 unless you can get a discount. The HIDs conversion from XENONLINK.com is about 75.00 to 119.00 now this is for the headlight only. You do the math for what little difference that has been discussed in the the visibility of the two. The XENONLINK is a plug and play. Have been using it since 08 with no complaints. That is using the 6000 Kelvin.

Any idea what I would use for my 03 SERK?
I am wanting to keep it close to Original, which means "No Passing Lights", but I could use a better headlight. Old eyes getting tired at night.
