Caliper Bolt Missing on '09 Ultra SE
« on: September 02, 2011, 08:47:00 PM »

Just returned from a trip to Wyoming/Montana and was cleaning the bike when I noticed one of the bolts missing from the left front caliper. It is NOT one of the mounting bolts and is NOT the pad pin. It is one of the bolts that holds the caliper together. Dealership does not offer the bolts separately and claims the only way they have for me to acquire the bolt is to purchase a new caliper. Anyone have any suggestions for finding a replacement bolt? I was in hopes the dealership would have one they had taken off but, no such luck! Other than travel from dealership to dealership and by chance finding a takeoff, I would appreciate any suggestions. The braking system is ABS and I understand they are manufactured by Brembo. I have contacted Brembo via their website, but have not gotten a response as of yet.

Thanks for any help you may offer.

Warranty is out. This is my fifth Harley and between all five of them I have not had to spend enough between them to offset the cost of one extended warranty. That is not to say I have not tested the water! In fact, my last Harley was an '05 Ultra (best Harley I have ever owned, by the way) and I had the extended warranty. The one and only time I tried to use it was due to a broken weld on the rear bumper bracket. But, wouldn't you know it, HD's extended warranty does not cover any kind of brackets, even though the dealers claim it is a "bumper to bumper" warranty. The worst case is that I will have to purchase a new caliper, which is still cheaper than the extended warranty. If that happens, at least I will have an extra bolt in case anyone ever needs one. I was in hopes of being successful as the "needer" this time, rather than the "haver"!

Gardner-Westcott has a chrome bolt kit for the Brembo calipers.  It won't be just one bolt but a set of those bolts that are visible (i.e., they cheap out and don't give you the bolt under the grill).  But that kit will get you back together.  It's GW kit # GWP-96-147.

Just checked eBay and Eastern Performance offers the kit.  Check the following link for a current listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/140550022752

One other option if you're interested.  I've disassembled several of those calipers to send off to the chrome shop.  Pretty sure I don't have any of those bolts left over as don't remember ever having any bad cores.  But I'll check.

Alternatively I'll pull one of the bolts out of a caliper set that is setting on a shelf not yet installed.  You can take the dimensional measures from it and order just a single bolt from someplace like DMP Fastners if you don't want to get the Gardner-Westcott kit.

Ooops, scrolled further down the listing on eBay and found another offering for $10 less.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/380326998058

$30 for the complete set and you'll have spares when you're done.

Just an FYI, one of the cores I opened up had had one of those bolts break off.  Thought it was missing the bolt until the halves were separated.  If a new bolt doesn't normally screw in keep that possibility in mind.

I stopped by the service department at the dealership, but they didn't have any. I wish they would have. I would have been riding today!

If they are the same as what was on the 2006 I have some I can send you. I changed to chrome (weeks before I sold the beauty) and have the black ones taking space. PM me if they are what you need.  Dave

Have a bunch of the old styple caliper bolts here also.  Don't think they're the same though.

They took two different size bolts top and bottom.  The Brembo calipers attachment bolts are the same length top and bottom.  And I think I remember the length being different than the longer bolt on the old style.  Will compare while putzing around in the shop tomorrow and find out for sure.
